What is the best way to combat chaffing does anyone know? Im chaffing really badly lately between my legs on the long runs...

What's the best thing to use and what have you tried in the past that actually works?? Vasaline, baby powder or anything else??

One word - bodyglide. It doesnt stain like vaseline and is more wear resistant

Or wear a layer of Lycra underneath.

Body glide is good yeah but this stuff is better again

Lycra or under-armer under your shorts usually works. Nike do shorts with an inner Lycra type short, they work quite well, but are hard to find (the Nike outlet in Kildare village didn't even have them!) JB sports in blanch have them...

Try shaving where you are shaffing (but wait until your skin is not sensitive anymore) / Vaseline helps too. Check your shorts too, get good quality, proper running shorts for racing and good tights for winter long runs.

These are the Nike shorts mentioned above. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/nike-7-inch-tempo-2-in-1-short/

They were recommended in another thread a few weeks ago. They should do the trick.

Whatever you do, don't send your OH into a chemist to ask for bodyglide.

You'll spend 20 minutes convincing them that you're not taking the p1ss out of them and that bodyglide is a legitimate product.

Then they'll go in to the nearest Boots and sheepily ask for ahem, cough, bodyglide

They'll then go bright red when chemist said they never heard of it and the OH then ends up asking for lube for her boyfriend. "BUT ITS FOR HIS RUNNING."

OH will come home mortified with some mad lube that actually works but looks so dodge that you'll never take it out in public.

+1 on these shorts - they are the business!

im wearing lycra cycling shorts underneath at the moment (starting wearing them as compression) but they don't seem to be helping at all... from a chaffing point of view.. Also its not between the thighs that that's hurting, its a little further up than that. .... so that's maybe why there not doin the trick!!

Im a fella BTW .... ha ha

I think ill give that bodyglide a lash.. hopefully it will sort out the problem.. Hope it doesen't squelsh around wen i run...eewwww!

There are a couple of types of Bodyglide so be sure to get the Anti-chafing one. I've yet to find a place in Cork that stocks it, The Edge sports have three or four different types but not the Anti Chafing one.

I've tried this Sport Shield roll on for my nips but found it took forever to dry, I got fed up waiting and threw on a T shirt which then had two big wet patches on it :o.

11 years ago the missus bought a big tub of "petroleum jelly", which was supposed to be used on the babies' bottoms, apparently. It was one of the things she bought on her mad shopping sprees while pregnant and then never used.

Anyway, it's been the business for anti-chaffing ever since, and 11 years later the tub is almost used up. No idea if they still stock it, it's similar to Vaseline (which works as well, but the greasiness is something most people don't like).

It was a lot cheaper than the "sports" specific stuff. It's mad, they take some product, put the words "sport" on the package and all of a sudden the price has at least doubled.

I got the anti chafing one in "the edge sports" by the kindsale road roundabout.

But doesn't petroleum jelly stain whereas the other "sports" specific stuff doesn't. I've tried both but prefer the bodyglide type stuff, it performs better and requires less.

That's where I went, upstairs, display on your right at the top of the stairs had lots of Bodyglide but didn't see any Anti Chafing the two times I've gone there in the past month.

Ah well, another excuse to go back there again :D.

I think I would have noticed by now if there were stains on my tops and shorts.

If you prefer bodyglide, keep using it.

That's why I phrased it as a question, you weren't specific about what you're actually using other than it's similar to vaseline, something which many around here have said stains clothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭BobMac104

a cousin of mine swears by aqueus cream aswell (big tub = 3-4 €)

The tub says "Petroleum jelly". The missus bought it in Boots 11 years ago.

Update: Wouldn't you believe it, they still have it on their web site. Except that the tub at home is at least 4 times the size.

I switched to Triathlon shorts a while back for longer runs which works a treat- Lube free too!

+1 for bodyglide. I use those nike 2-in-1 shorts too and they are find for about 12 miles. After that the chafing starts, in the same area as you describe. Bodyglide sorted that right out. The one i have comes as a stick, like a deodorant stick and it really does a great job. It washes off very easily too.
It is more expensive, relatively speaking, but it works and doesn't stain like vaseline or baby oil

Had the same problem on my long runs. Then used Vaseline and not a scratch since!
