    Help!

The lounge in my house was previously used as a bedroom and hence the fireplace was covered over. Now I want to open it up and reinstate a real fire etc

There's an air vent in the chimney breast just below the ceiling (pictured). Never looked in there until today and found there is a hole (pictured) drilled right through into the flue

Can this be repaired / filled or patched up?? Or should I leave as-is and install new flexi steel flue top to bottom?

Hoping not to have to get two sections of flue dug out and replaced at huge cost not to mention the mess

It may be possible to repair it, removing a couple of blocks in the affected area and inserting a new section of flue liner. however this is tricky work and it may be best to contact a contractor that specialises in chimney repairs like this. Alternatively the hole could be patched and the whole flue lined with a stainless steel liner and surrounded with vermiculite. Cost may be the deciding factor here.

I would put a steel liner down it and repair the hole, you would be best to check out the chimney first.

Have the whole chimney liner checked! Carbon monoxide, the silent killer!

    Thanks guys.

Any idea how much steel lining might cost? Or even any contractors on the Souithside that do this kind of work?

    Cheers
