Recommend a tool set

My trusty socket/tool set is coming to it's end of life and needs to be replaced. I bought it in Argos about a million years ago and has served me well during the years of car/bike ownership.

I was in Lidl today and saw they have a toolset for €79.99 (sorry, no link). I also see from another thread, Halfords are having a special on a Phaze 275 piece toolset.

Does anyone own any of these sets or can you recommend one? Unfortunately budget doesn't extend to any Snap On equipment :(

Wear good knuckle protecting gloves when using cheap tools.

Teng do good specials in some factors, may be a bit dearer but they will last you a life time and you end up not having heaps of stuff in the kit that you never use like with some of the supermarket stuff.

I've read a few recommendations from owners of the Halford's professional range. But best to wait until they're on offer. (I haven't used one myself.)

I have two older Teng sets which are good quality but my newer Teng 3/4in ratchet didn't last long.

Another vote for the Halfords pro stuff when it's on offer.

I've had no issues with the stuff I got there and it does get used and abused.

Halfords are doing the socket sets half price yet again

Spend the extra on the bigger set as there's a great selection of sockets, Allen sockets, torx etc.

I'd imagine that set isn't too great. Found their own brand ratchets and sockets great despite dogs abuse

Better to build up a collection of pliers, vice grips etc rather than buying a box of scrap.

If its quality you're looking for then I would recommend this one http://www.bgstechnic.de/product.php?id=48&prodID=00060 but I dont know a dealer that sells them in Ireland and if you did I wouldnt say it would be cheap.

I saw this set on special from Louis which is a huge German Bike shop.
Its a pretty comprehensive set with 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" inch drive.
Sockets are 6pt flank drive not those ****e 12pt nut rounders and there is a decent selection of Bits including Torx and security TX which are handy on French stuff
German market stuff has to be of a reasonable standard, or it won't sell in Germany so I would have no fear of buying this kind of thing.
postage is 9.95 flat rate so the whole shebang will cost 80 euro delivered.
I think its pretty good value, If I didn't already have many seperate sets I would probably get it at that price.
Its not Stahlwille but you would barely get a set of ring spanners for that money if you bought Stahlwille!

    Halford's professional range +1

Another possibility is to keep using your own stuff, and buy individual top quality replacements when needed. That's what we have being doing at home for the past few years and it's worked so far.

As for the aura of Snap-on quality, I've a Snap-on 1/2" - 5/8" Open spanner in the botttom of the box that must be 50 years old. It was the Grandfathers, and I've never seen another spanner to fit a bolt like it! Even with it's age, it's still perfect!

Halfords tools are great. Top up whatever you buy with a set of their ratchet spanners, you'll not regret them

I've never heard of that particular manufacturer. Do they have a good rep for decent quality tools? Looks very similar in spec to the kit I got in Halfords today.

I ended up picking you this 90 piece Halfords set. I would have like to have gotten the next set up but couldn't stretch to the €124.99 asking price, even after haggling in store :D. Shame there are no ratchet spanners in the set I purchased though.

Found a distributor for the BGS gear

    http://www.oxyarc.ie/

They're based in Dundalk. €180 incl VAT for that particular kit.

The halfords one for 124.99 is def worth the extra, if only to have pairs of a particular size of spanner. The ratchet spanners are indeed very handy and you get spark plug sockets,

    They'd probably still exchange them

Bought this set of Amazon last year for 40 pounds

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001K9QEA

Postage was free and the price worked out €60 cheaper then a local tool shop

I wouldn't have massive use for it, but they feel very sturdy

    I think they've a lifetime warranty too

any tools in lidl are most likely of german origin and will be the best you probably ever will get imo a lot of the stuff in halfords is poor quality
