Tried to turn on my toshiba satellite l450d - 128 laptop earlier however now it won't turn on properly.

All that happens it that the screen does not come on at all, the fan still runs and only the power light comes on. Even when I close down the screen the fan still runs which it's not meant to do. I've tried taking the battery out and that but nothin changes.

Anybody able to help me out here?

Do you have an external monitor that you can hook up to it to check it's definitely the screen at fault?

Are there any beeps when it's booting up?

Do you see the BIOS screen at all?

Nope, I used to have one but not anymore.

And no to the second question as well, just the normal noise from the cd player.

The screen doesn't come on at all, like as if the laptop is off.

I will say though that it does have some overheating problems but I often spray compressed air into the grill/fan which does the job.

The only way to troubleshoot it fully would either to get another monitor or even another laptop and put your hard disk in to that to see if it boots up.

It's quite tough to narrow a hardware related problem on a laptop seeing the only things you can remove are the likes of RAM or the cd drive. Have you tried doing that? That it, removing or switching RAM to other slots and taking out the cd drive (if you can) and trying to power it up again?

It could even be the screen. Trick is to rule out everything until you know for certain what's at fault.

This happened to my son's Toshiba satellite laptop, turned out to be "the chip that powered up the screen". This was the diagnosis that was explained to me at the repairer's

    Thanks for the replies!

Was just doing some searching and it does indeed look like the BIOS has being corrupted.

Going to try and get onto Toshiba tomorrow and see what they can do from their end.

    Any other advice welcome.

Do you have warranty for your laptop?

    Sounds like a CPU problem.
