Static interference on MP3

I swapped out my car radio for the latest Tevion offering from Aldi, all in all not a bad piece of kit. One problem I notice is the MP3 player won't play while the unit is charging from the cigarette lighter, this was never a problem with my old radio, a Sony CDX-gt420u. I thought it might be an earth problem and added an extra earth but no luck.
I really like the Bluetooth option but I often travel long distances and listen to audiobooks, so this is a pain for me. Any suggestions?

How is the mp3 player connecting to the head unit? Have you any other devices you can plug into the cigarette lighter (phone charger?)? I'm wondering if it's your mp3 player that's suffering interference or the head unit itself. What car is this in?

It's connecting via standard 3.5mm jack, I've tried several. Phone and Sat Nav charge OK from the lighter socket. Car is 2005 Hyundai Getz.

Are you getting interference when using the cigarette lighter to power other devices?

No and charging the MP3 player does not affect radio or USB performance.
I have connected an outside source, a portable USB charger, to the MP3 player and it will charge it while not affecting playback, I don't know if that raises more questions than it answers or whether it is even a wise thing to do.
