I left them years ago for that very reason. However went back this year as they have upgraded to fibre optics in my area. No freezes in a year . Only complaint is that HD box is slow compared to sky box !

Freezes were normally caused when signal was to weak to transmit digital picture!

My Father switched to UPC and it's crap compared to Sky.

    Slow response EPG.
    Lip sync Issues.
    Replaced box.
You need to pay extra for channels that are free to air.
    Little to no +1 channels.
No HD channels many of which are free to air (on basic subscription at least).

Personally I see little point in getting either Sky or UPC basic when you can, with a one-off purchase, get a combo box which can cost less than 4 months basic Sky/UPC subscription and give you plenty of channels for free* forever.

*apart from the cost of the TV licence and electricity of course.

I'm fairly new to this but I'll have a go.

A combo box will unite all the Freesat channels broadcast to the UK and Ireland (you would need a Sky or similar dish aligned) and the Irish digital terrestrial channels (from a terestrial aerial) on a single channel list.

This list of channels will include.

    RTE1 (& +1)
    RTE2
    TV3
    TG4
    e3
    RTE news
BBC 1, 2, 3, 4 (Including Hi Def, and regional options like Northern Ireland BBC 1&2)
    ITV 1, 2, 3, 4 (Including Hi Def, +1hr, and UTV options)
    Ch4
    More4
    E4
    Channel 5
    Info Tv
    Community Channel
    Food Network
    Travel channel
    CBS reality
    CBS action
    CBS Drama
    Film 4
    Sky News
    Euronews
    CNN
    Russia Today
    Al Jazeera english
    True Movies 1&2
    Movies4men !&2
    Men & Movies
    Horror Channel

There are also music channels and more stuff I never watch.

This thread led me to the combo box option.

You can buy the Avira 120 combo box from either of these Irish websites OP for around €100.

    http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/HD_Ariva_120_Combo_Box.html

    http://www.tvtrade.ie/satellite-receivers/combined-digital-receivers.html

I have no affiliation with either of these businesses.

Please note that these boxes are quite basic in that they wouldn't have as good an EPG as either Sky or UPC and they don't have a recordable drive*.

I'm getting out of my depth now OP!

*There is a USB slot so an external drive can be set up to record.

    Good luck.

Not everyone can stick a dish onto their properties so they have to use UPC.

Also the free channels aren't all they are cracked up to be some people like to watch Nat Geo, Eurosport etc.
