was out for a stalk this morn, heard a buck grunting in full swing just beside a young plantation where i shoot,i got within 150yds but couldnt get a shot off the bipods at him,i had to stand up and with that a doe that i never saw at the far side of the hedge gave a bark, stalk ruined again, the buck took off running to the wood to the left of me with his 5 does and stooped just at the edge of the wood at 80yds,i had a quick heart and lung shot fired but missed off the shoulder,my question is will he be back this eve or saturday morn,he was on his ruttinn stand?

Should have left him off and not taken the shot and he might have been back again that evening. The sound of gunfire could have him very alert for danger for a while.

How sure are you that you missed heart and lung (engine shot as I call it) aint going to always stop them in there track you give a good look around for blood as he could be in the wood?? should of went high shoulder/neck shot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭hunterpajero

yes 100% positive that i missed,he turned as i was firing, there was no thump report sound hitting him instead the bullet hitting the wood, still followed up the shot and no blood or hair to be found, didnt get a chance to go back this eve but we will have a date saturday morn:)

oh what a disaster, went for him again yesterday and not a sight or sound of him only a bout three year old buck at the plantation, had gun resting on a stake and fired at him heart and lungs at 110yds and never even tickled him,wtf like, went on then again yesterday and missed two more bucks after that, what a disaster of aday, came home and checked the rifle and was firing roughly 4 inches to the left,i adjusted the scope and then it was firing 3 inches to the right,i fired seven shots at the target yesterday and could not get them to group at all:confused:,the nearest grouping i got was bout one and a half to two inches, anyone any suggestions??

4 inches to the left would still be on "target" if you were aiming at the heart. Would hit i suppose the shoulder.
Are you sure you missed them ?
Shot a hind last year at about 150 m , heart in 2 pieces. She still stood up (she was lying) as if nothing happened and made 20 meters before dropping. So i guess a buck during the rut could go a long way especially if you missed the lungs and heart.

yes again 100% misses i follow up all my shots, talking to glensman there he reckons it could be the crown of the barrell,im going investagating now to see, hopefully i can pin point the problem and prat the problem is not me:(

Have you a mod on it that could be loose?
check that the rings are nto after coming loose on the scope or if you have a different scope try that.
Even though a S&B should last decades.

Sounds like you have a good set up there no question about that!!! are u firing rounds in quick succession or letting the barrel cool before each shot?? You shud be getting half inch groups with it asuming the barrel is not fouled completely. Also i have a 243 and you would be better off necking any deer with it,from experience it knocks them down and they won,t be getting up. I hope u get it sorted.

no i can only fire two rounds and have to let it cool for ten min or that, the third shot is always out by a few inches if i dont otherwise, ive shot deer red fallow and sika neck and lung shots and have stopped 99% of them, well thats if i hit em:mad:by anychance could it be the box of bullets im firing, all misses have being from the same box and the shots at the target yesterday were from that box aswell

What type of ammo are you using ? With my Tikka i found federals and hornadys very good!! You will have to try out another box of ammo to be sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭tfox

Is it a floating barrel ?

If so check its not touching the forend anywhere as this will put your shot off by a fair bit.

Last year b4 the season I was having all sorts of trouble grouping mine, cudnt get it within 5 inches, turned out it was slightly rubbing the forend with mod on and on bi-pod due to flexible forend.

I stiffened up the forend, no there is no way the barrel can touch it and it's
1/2 inch at 100 when I put my mind to it

Is there any damage to the crown ,even the slightest damage will have it all over the spot ?Was the barrel ever shot with water or cleaning oils in it ?Sounds like it needs another person with a fresh set of eyes and a clear mind to look at it.Maybe a gunsmith .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭hunterpajero

stripped down my rifle last week and gave it a thorough cleaning, took off scope mounts and barrel,i reasembled it and put the shoy saver threw it,went to the field and fired 3 shots was all to get it zeroed, finally confidence was back...and here is the final result, the rutting buck
