Hi, new to the boards! Just wondering if any one has had any experience of getting ear corrective surgery / gotten their ears pinned back? I am considering doing this with the Hospital Group which is based all over the country. Have an appointment for a consultation in the Cork branch. I don't know anyone who has been through this procedure or who has attended the clinic. Also was quoted 2995- that's with a day procedure without being the over night stay and being awake for the procedure! Would appreciate any insights or experiences!! :)

    Hi Molly,

I will try and give you my advice.....

The procedure you are requesting is an otoplasty and is essentially placing the ears back into a less prominent position.

Firstly, ask who will be performing your surgery, ideally you want a surgeon who has his/her name on the Medical Council SPECIALIST REGISTER for PLASTIC SURGERY.

If they do not then simply walk away as they will not necessarily be fully qualified !! In Ireland anyone holding a medical degree can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon without having any formal training !!!

Another tip would be to see their qualifications, they should have the intercollegiate specialty board exam in plastic surgery (FRCS plast).

My concerns regarding 'high street' cosmetic clinics is that they are a business first and a 'healthcare' provider second. Many of the surgeons working in such clinics do not live in Ireland and fly in/out so if you have a problem contacting and seeing someone may be a problem.

Have you not considered seeing a plastic surgeon privately in his/her rooms ? Cork has a superb plastic surgery department and I am sure the consultants do some private work. All of them are on the specialist register, all of them will have passed the FRCS plast and all of them will be contactable.

If you wish you can pm me for some of the names.

You cannot guarantee a perfect outcome with any surgeon (qualified or not) but you can try and minimise the risk.

    Hope this helps,

    Drfrank

I too am in Cork and I'm wondering if there are any other people that perform the operation in Cork than The hospital group. Shandoon Street is closed it seems as is Harley Street Medical group in Shanakiel.

I really would like feedback/advice with this with regard to surgeons and the actual operation itself.

You could probably see a plastic surgeon privately in CUH. You could at least chat to them and get an impression of the procedure etc. It's not a one stop quick fix procedure and I'd strongly recommend talking to a good plastic surgeon and then thinking about it.

as per our charter we don't allow people to recommend individual doctors or clinics.

speak to your gp for a referral.
