Fed up of Gmail on iPhone 4

I keep getting emails sent to my 'allmail' box - everything!! Even photos that I try to email within the camera app to someone else go back into that box.

Always bcc myself is switched off in settings.

Ive deleted the email account already, switched the phone off and on again, and re-installed it again. No difference.

I can't locate how to turn off sync email on the phone within the settings, as its very annoying to have my emails disappear from my laptop after deleting them from my iphone.

any advice/guidance appreciated. Im sick of getting nowhere within google mobile help/email help. Its no help:(

Isn't that the point of the All Mail box? its everything sent or received (except spam).
    Just use the inbox?

    Or have I misunderstood?

That is the point of all mail.

Why bcc yourself? Why not just use sent email.

The point is bcc myself IS OFF, so why is it being sent to my all mailbox, I don't want it there at all. Sent mail is enough to be deleting or cleaning up without having to go to all mailbox just to do it all over again.

That's just how Gmail works. Everything goes into All Mail. Also, with the default settings on the iPhone, when you delete mail it is actually archived rather than deleted on the Gmail server. I'm not sure if you can turn this off.

Google don't want you deleting mail. They'd much rather you archived everything. That's how they make money.

Just ignore the all mailbox and use the inbox.

You're all confused. Its got nothing to do with bcc.

Gmail has a feature called all mail that lets you see all mail. You can't do anything with it.

Except confuse newbies, and create a mess within the hierarchy email files, which takes up storage space at the end of it all:(

I think eventually once I get to know the phone and settings you can adjust the files somewhere..........

You're thinking about it all wrong. Theres no hierarchy on gmail. No extra space.

Its just one big load of emails, they are just tagged with different labels. When you click on a label it does a search based on the tag/label. Theres no folders. If you think there a hierarchy, you've not "got" how it works.

Its like if you had all your photos all the same place, then you search on say Xmas 2010 just to see those. Then you search on all photos to see them all. They are all the same photos there's no duplicates.

If you want to use hierarchy idea with Gmail, use Outlook or thunderbird to connect to it. (well on the desktop) not the iPhone.

thats because you are deleting them on your phone, i thought you understood this from one of your other threads.

You can equally say "as its very annoying to have my emails disappear from my phone after deleting them from my laptop"

You can just go to 'edit' and move to trash if you want to delete rather than archive.

Thanks all for replies - just wasn't getting the answer I was looking for in my original thread thats why I started a new one.

Didn't think it would cause any of you a problem doing so.........

I am using imap settings btw..........and I do understand that the emails disappear from the phone when they are deleted from the laptop.

    My problem still is:

Im not getting the answer Im looking for because basically - its not possible to do what I want with gmail.

Will just have to get used to it; and Im posting this reply in my other thread too to close it off:D

    Is the Gmail account required?
Could you easily transfer to Yahoo or similar?

Wont I just end up with the same problems? I just want to leave the original on the computer, and delete from the phone to save memory on the phone. (presuming it is taking up memory of course:confused:)

it will be taking up very very little memory as the phone is simply pulling the emails from Gmail's servers. lets put it this way, one photo will take up more space give or take........

do you delete your gmail from your PC to save space?

Emails take up very little memory. I really wouldn't worry about it. But if you want you can set Gmail up as an exchange account and set it to only sync the last week or month's worth of email.

You can delete sent mail if you want. But I can't see a way to do it automatically. I think its counter to the Gmail concept anyway. They give you so much space you should never need to do it for regular email.

I use outlook and pop3 for work and important stuff. Gmail I just use for unimportant stuff. Because theres somethings gmail doesn't do well. In my opinion at least.

You could not use the gmail app, but look at it through the browser. Nothing downloads to the phone then.

Short answer: don't worry it's not taking up memory on your phone

Long answer: technically it does use a small amount of memory on your phone, but this won't really increase as you get new emails. When you check your email, it partially downloads the last 50 or so in your inbox or whichever box you're checking. Say for example you have 50 emails in your inbox, and you then get another email. Email 50 becomes email 51 and is wiped from memory as far as I know.
