Interesting article, but for the record Cork is Irelands ''real'' second city :-)

They really appear to be pushing this titanic quarter up there.

This appears to be no more than a QBC type arrangement?

Yes, it's "busways". Still inefficient rubber-tyred transport. Useless in snowy weather too.

Under proposals the east, west and Titanic Quarter will be linked with the city centre via dedicated bus lanes with streamlined ticketing service.

Three preferred rapid transit routes for Belfast have been unveiled.

The first route, CITI, will travel from Queen's Quay to Queen's Road within the Titanic Quarter, returning via Station Street and Bridge End.

The second route, EWAY, will travel from East Bridge Street via Albertbridge Road, and the Upper Newtownards Road, terminating at a park and ride site near Quarry Corner.

The third route, WWAY, will travel from Grosvenor Road via the Falls Road, Andersonstown Road and Stewartstown Road, terminating at a park and ride site near Dairy Farm and/or McKinstry Road roundabout.

Plans to turn a seven-mile pedestrian route through east Belfast, the Comber Greenway, into a busway have been dropped.

Regional development minister Danny Kennedy said: "Belfast Rapid Transit will help to transform that transport system, providing quick and efficient access into and across the city and helping to regenerate and open up new development opportunities along its routes".

"It will play a key role in supporting local economies, linking businesses with markets and linking communities and people with jobs."

There will be relocation of some on-street parking, with the emphasis on short-term spots which would be rigorously policed.

There will be modification to some junctions plus road-widening and the intention would be to integrate rapid transit with other forms of public transport.

There will be a connecting hub around the City Hall where passengers can change between services.

The buses will have easy access and use the latest engine technologies with low noise and emission levels.

The halts will provide ticket purchase points. Traffic signals will provide priority for rapid transit services.

Mr Kennedy said: "We need to re-prioritise how we travel and change our travel behaviour to encourage a shift away from the private car and towards public transport".

The public consultation will last until January.
