Just got called to a friend's broken down Tigra which turned out to be overheating. Fan's coming on fine at the half way poing on the temp guage, and there's plenty of water inside the expansion bottle, hoses feel firm, but the rad seemed broken. Normally where you'd have a bar of steel across the top of the rad, it was just the open metal vanes, all of which were twisted. Is that the way the rad's supposed to be? I've bugger all experience with Opels, but I'm thinking it got a shunt in the front at some point and the rad didn't come off the better of it.

I'm going to put it down to either a failed water pump, or more likely the rad, but would be grateful if anyone with experience with this engine could chip in.

No experience of them but if 'twas the water pump the rad contents would be cold I would think.

Hmmm. Good thinking there. Getting the car on Friday, so I'll test that first. Cheers RJ!

First thing to do is check if the internal heater is working as it should.

Am I right in saying this is basically a 2 door Opel corsa? Should be lots of info on the net...

I'm literally just looking for the answer to the question about the rad, if it should look like that. A new rad is dirt cheap if not. I'll be putting the car on a ramp on Friday and will do all the other normal diagnosis then - but if the rad is damaged I'd prefer to order it tomorrow and have it there on Friday rather than tie up the car and be waiting until Monday for it.

Any chance of a pic? Not so easy to comment without seeing the problem.

There's not much to go wrong with a rad, provided there isn't a hole in it and it isn't blocked with sludge... If you disconnect the top and bottom hose you should be able to flush water through it and check for blockages...

Both fairly poor pics but the rad looks weird in the bottom one

Thanks again RJ, looks like on the top photo the vanes are visible, but on the bottom a frame is present. Will just roll up the sleeves on Friday and get at it I guess :D

Are the 2 pics you posted of the same generation tigra?
Slam panels are different, batterys in different places etc.

The first pic is a corsa but the rad is the same as in a tigra. Those rads only have end caps, they don't have any frame over the top or bottom of the cooling fins.

When its running and the fan is on are both rad pipes hot?
