I think the Foxsat recordings are encrypted.
I'm sure someone will have the definitive answer though .

As far as I know you can copy SD recordings and play them on a PC but HD recordings are encrypted. You can however copy them to an external disk and play them through the Foxsat to free up space on the internal drive.

Well you can def copy SD content to external hard drive via usb. Have done that many times (HD is encryted alright). Copying via usb is tedious though as the interface for doing this is a bit cumbersome and you have the 4gb file limit to deal with as well.

Accessing over ftp has the potential to make life easier. Think I will order this wifi bridge and will see how it goes.

I've copied stuff from the Foxsat to a USB hard drive as well - I still haven't watched any of it as it was enough bother getting it there without going into reverse mode to view it. I've forgotten what's on it now :o
I'd be very interested in your option with the bridge - please let us know how you get on. I'm constantly having to dump content to free up space.

HD recordings are copy protected but generally you can copy recordings made from BBC and Channel4 HD channels to an external drive once - you cannot transfer them back, due to the copy protection. ITV HD recordings are, afaik, fully protected and cannot be transferred. You can watch the recordings back through the Humax bit not on another device due to the encryption.

However, if you make the recordings in Non-Freesat mode they are not encrypted and you can copy them as many times as you wish and watch the recordings on a computer or iPhone using VLC without any conversion, the same as you can the SD recordings.

If you want to transfer recordings larger than 4gb the external drive has to be EXT3 formatted - I have a 2TB external drive with hundreds of movies and other stuff copied non to it from the Foxasat - works great. Now if only I had the time to actually watch them all.

There is no legal reason why we wouldn't get it AFAIK. 4oD is not geoblocked on web from Ireland.

(BBC iplayer by contrast cannot be made available free of charge to non UK TV license payers under the terms of the BBC Trust)
