    Hi all,

Just checked the post box to find a letter from the social welfare inspector, stating he is calling to see me friday regarding my Jobseekers Allowance. It has come as a bit of a shock to me! It says the following details will be required, 1.details of your income from self-employment in the year to date.

    Whats this all about?

Have you applied for jobseekers? Are you self-employed? If the answer to both is yes then social welfare inspector(SWI) will need to see your accounts for the year in order to ascertain your means. If you dont have the accounts to hand you will be given x amount of time to produce them.

I've been on JSA for over a year.

I'm not self employed but have been looking into getting on a BTWA scheme.

Meet the guy, be nice, produce what is required. You have no skeletons so you have no concerns.

That is where the confusion is. Were you self-employed prior to going on JSA?

No I was never self employed. I opened a business account some time back when I knew my job was at risk because I planned on trying to start a similar business myself but that never materialised.

Just took me by surprise when I read the letter! I have done a little bit of work for a local primary school, fixed some computers for them and they insisted they pay me so I did out a bill for €185 for them in the business account name. Would that be what is resulting in this meeting or is it just standard?

Well tbh if you have a business account name and have invoiced someone even though its only for €185 that is probably why the Inspector is visiting you. Nothing to worry about as you have the bill etc.

that wouldn't make sense unless you hadn't reported that you were paid for the work and then someone else reported that you were paid for work

if you hadn't reported that you had been paid for work, then I'd say it'd be a good idea to tell the inspector the full story. you didn't get a ton of money so I doubt it'll impact your social welfare payments.

similar story happened to me, got a one-off payment being on JSB (~e300) and informed them about it, they told me not to worry about that if it was only this one time.
