    Hiya,

Just got my first iPhone and am slowly getting used to it. Downloaded the Skype app and rang a relative in Canada last night, they have skype too. Tapped into my Wifi here in the house and was on for about half an hour. Unfortunately, I got a call from 02 today to say I'd gone over on my bill by 50 quid. Turns out I was using the O2 network and not the Wifi and I've paid the price!! I was certain I was using the Wifi as it said I was connected!

Can someone explain to me where I went wrong and what I can do to prevent this from happening in the future?

    Thanks

Firstly, are you sure you were connected to the wifi?
Do you see the wifi icon on top of the screen?

Might be a stupid question, but are you certain you called them from within the skype app and not the native iphone calling screen?

An expensive lesson but now you know how to use it :)

I'm still a bit confused by this. If wifi wasn't connected, then the OP would have been using Skype on O2's 3G network, and not calling Canada directly on O2's voice network. Why would half an hour of data usage bump him 50 quid over his bill? I didn't know Skype would work outside wifi anyway?

    Maybe no data bundle?

To use Skype as a telephone you need Skype credits, otherwise you can only do video calls.

Regardless of whether or not you use video, Skype to Skype calls are free from Skype. What network technology you use to facilitate the call is a completely different matter as are the costs associated. You only need Skype credits when one of the call participants is not using Skype.
