Windows 7 upgrade question

    I currently have a sony vaio TZ21 laptop. Super portable and great battery time but very slow with windows vista.

    1. Will windows 7 be faster than vista do you guys think?

    2. Can I upgrade it similar to the way Lion Os upgrade occurs on Mac, ie that all my software, files and settings remain and just the OS is upgraded or do I need to reinstall all these then? I have things like stats software, Endnote, Office etc.

    Yes you can upgrade but for a better speed experience a format and re-install would be better. That is a major pain to do so it really depends on how bad the speed problem is and how related it is to clutter.

    I've just done exactly what you are asking on a Dell laptop I haVE with Vista 64 bit edition on, which would freeze on just about every single task.


    I reformated and installed a Win 7 32 bit edition as I couldnt do a direct update as it wouldnt allow me, didnt have much so didnt mind this and am absolutely thrilled as now for the first time I can use the laptop properly so I would highly recommend it.

    But as already stated if u are doing a direct update you not loose any info and any potential program problems will be displayed prior to install as WIN7 does a scan of your system and displays the results first.

    Just to add to this, Sony have sh*t driver support, I did something similar on a Vaio and the Vista hotkey program failed to work on Windows 7. So just be aware you may loose some functionality unless Sony provide a Windows 7 hotkey program. The functionality lost is being unable to use FN and arrows to change brightness, stuff like that. There are manual work arounds though.
    Yes you will find Windows 7 much quicker than Vista, and most Vista drivers will work on 7, unless Sony developed them of course :P
