    Hey,
A quick question. Whats the standard recommended rate to purchase photographs of someone for print & internet use with credit given? Interested in purchasing photographs of two people who do photography on the side for print use.

    Interested in your thoughts. :)

    Cheers!

Depends on the print run and the usage of the prints. Now dig into your pockets and buy some of my pics of Waterford :p

Iv never needed photographs of Waterford Ken. :) If you had some of Tramore, line up! But do send me on your portfolio, handy to have.

In this particular case, talking about 1k.

its a fairly broad/vague question....there is no recommended rate - various unions will give suggestions but different photographers will charge different prices.

you want to purchase images off someone - but want rights to reproduce (re-print the image) and want to use the image online (credit given is fairly immaterial in my opinion as long as payment is given)

if the people do photography "on the side" then best thing to do is ask the people if they are not professional I cant see them charging professional prices - so you could get usage for a lot less than you expect or budget for.

It could also be possible to reproduce the images yourself* or if you have someone with knowledge of photography which could cost you even less.

*= this may not be possible if the images you require have specific people or specific lighting - but might be possible if you are lucky....what I'm talking about it staging or shooting the same scene.

I just want to give them a fair price, rather than taking them to the cleaners and getting it cheap. The photographers are excellent, but its not their full time job. Id like to be able to use them for print on the calendar for the tourism site I run, and maybe on the online gallery.

Firstly - well done to you

Secondly - why not ask them what they consider a fair price and maybe throw an extra €50 or €100 onto it - I'm sure they would be chuffed and would not consider themselves taken advantage of.

One particular person I had an arrangement with for five photographs for €50. The photographs were for local businesses and they got them on a disc to use wherever.

But me buying directly for a calendar, I just want to be sure anybody who offers a photograph is getting a fair deal.

Given your starting position is a desire to be fair, you won't go far wrong. While pros will pre set price structures (cos they need to make a living) Amateurs are a much more varied lot, some have deluded notions of value, others are more interested in the glory of "being published". In contrast to the poster above, credit is vital to me, as is a copy of the publication, the actual fee paid is less important, photography will never earn my living, it won't even pay for my equipment...
One fair way to set a price is to see what a stock library would charge, and pay that...

Stock librarys are generally more expensive and its a higher class of photography anyway.
