Sound not working correctly - realtek/DELL

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with onboard realtek audio driver and an external M Audio Audiophile USB sound i/o

Last night everything was working with balanced sound, today after updating Vista things went wrong, the on board sound was very loud out of the right channel and quiet from the left, while the Audiophile was dead on right channel and okay on the left! I updated the drivers for both sadly the problem/s remain.

The vista updates are security updates for MS .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.

Any ideas? (and yes I did switch it off and back on again from "cold")

Look in the System Tray for the Realtek Control Panel (It may have a orange audio type icon), if not open Realtek Manager in control panel. Check the settings in this are ok, there is a L/R volume adjust in here which could have changed, also, make sure under sound effects none are selected

Done all that! I've checked every parameter I can find in the properties of both devices. :)

Hmm, something else you could try:
Right click on Volume Control icon>playback devices>speakers>Properties>Levels make sure Rear & Front are balenced ok, also look under enhancements make sure none are ticked. Thats a weird one though, try also unplugging/replugging the speakers so they get "Re sensed" by the driver.

    Another thing you can try:
    Uninstall Realtek driver
    Download This
Boot into safemode and use it to remove Realtek driver
Download newest Realtek driver and install

    Nope, that makes no difference.

    Fixed it

It was a bad socket/plug connection to the "primary" speaker (the right takes the power and feeds it to the left one)

    Thanks for your time :)
