I wanna get a ds and start getting ds games.
Where would the best place to get one be?
How much would you expect to pay for a boxed second one?
Also which one is the best?
What are the best games? Any type no preference here.

Is the retro forum the place for this?

Get a DS lite and a 3DS. Also don't get a DS on an auction site, the place is littered with fakes. Same with games, mostly the popular ones like the pokemon games. I wouldn't recommend a second hand one since the screens can be scratched or develope dead pixels but you can always ask to see the console before you buy.

If you do buy on ebay I'd advise against buying one from Asia. Go for one from the UK or something. Same thing with the games.

The DSlite is gorgeous, easy to find too, GS and HMV have them quite cheap.
The DSi feels like a DSlite with needless extras, the DSiXL interests me, however.

how much roughly in GS and HMV?

Is there any special editions ones? Like I know there's a Zelda pack, saw them on ebay and very expensive.

I would love to get a DSi XL - I'm awaiting a price drop on them which may never come :( They are actually more expensive than a 3DS unbelievably!!

To the OP - Its up to yourself which to go for as each machine is different. Its worth doing some detailed research on them yourself and have a search for prices in your local retailers. Personally, I would recommend a DS Lite if you can get one cheap for about €80 new from HMV or Argos if they are in stock - otherwise the 3DS is the way to go - its backwards compatible, has its own new games with loads of great titles due out next year, plus it plays all DS games fine.

But as I say its up to yourself. You may not want 3D, you might be on a tight budget or you may want huge DSi XL screens. Maybe you want to be able to download games or import stuff..... We can't really recommend games either apart from the obvious ones as you don't seem to list your favourite genres. If you be a bit more specific we could probably help a little better.

I would suggest reading up on the various websites online that have those lists of "The best DS games ever" - sites lite Gamesradar and IGN are good places to start.

I would be recommending the DS lite especially as there are no firmware issues to worry about and if homebrew and emulation are your loves are might be in the future then that's the one to go for.
They are about 60 to 70 preowned and you can check the condition before buying so you don't get a scratched one.

DS Lite gret console made from a single block of granite!
Great for emulation and piracy and a nice size unlike the DSi and DSi XL which are too big for pockets.

You know, this thread got me thinking......

The biggest complaint I have about the DS, and the reason I believe the GBA is superior, is the lack of particular genre representations. The GBA has some fantastic racing games such as Konami Crazy Racers and the F-Zero trilogy, plus it has an arguably superior Mario Kart than is on the DS. There are no sports games on the DS that are as good as the likes of Mario Tennis and Mario Golf on the GBA, and the shmups on the DS are few and far between. The lack of a 2D Metroid on the DS and the pish-poor Zelda representation harms it also. GBA owns in this regard. No annoying touch screen shoe-horning on the GBA also....

The DS of course has plenty of RPGs - millions in fact, its got loads of brilliant puzzles games and a raft of excellent platformers. It is a great system for these games, possibly one of the best ever, but its software line-up isn't very well rounded, unlike the Advance in my view. There are few genres, if any in fact, that aren't well represented on the GBA.

Having said that, using the DS for the above three outlined genres is really good. DS is the best console on the planet for puzzle games. I genuinely couldn't image a better way to play Sudoku than with the touch screen and the DS held vertically. My recent purchase of Nintendo Presents Crossword Collection is just as good as anything else puzzle related on the system - it really has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to touch screen puzzle games - games like Zoo Keeper, Meteos and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes are some of the best puzzle games ever made.

The amount of excellent RPGs is mind-boggling. There are more role-players on the DS than any other system surely? Enough to keep the biggest RPG cosplay weirdo busy for years! And the platformers are excellent too - the underrated Super Princess Peach is a gem of a game, there are four superb Kirby titles on it, Yoshi's got two decent efforts and New Super Mario Bros is great fun to play. Plenty of Sonic action, the immense Ivy the Kiwi and Henry Hatsworth are great third party efforts too.

I love the DS then, but it is a system that needed a better balanced line-up of games. In fairness, Nintendo seem to be rightifying things with the 3DS - it seems to have a better balance of games out for it, even though it does not have much of an overall library available right now.
