Wicklow Gaol Break Half Marathon & 10km - The Coastal, Scenic and Atmospheric race.

    25th March Wicklow Town

Back by popular demand in 2012 is the Half marathon...

If there are no changes to the calendar it will be the first Half Marathon in 2012.

People drive long distances for scenic routes and pay accordingly for them. Wicklow Town is 52mins from Dublin...

We start and finish in the courtyard of Wicklow Gaol which is quite unique and a great setting for spectators and atmospherics.

Website is mid way under construction (the text details are all there) I just want to jizz it up a bit.

Short 2min video of the event here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9brr6kcw7o (check out the best supporters EVER in the clip. Cute!)

Early bird of €35 until Dec 31st and then a group discount of 15% for 5 or more kicks in until end of Feb.

Look forward to welcoming you to Wicklow Town :)

Enjoyed this 10k last year although thought it was a tough course. Would be interested in tackling the half if I don't do connemara

    Cool.
Funny that I often thought of the race as an alternative to Connemara. We won't compete on scenery (even though its very nice in Wicklow...) but gone is the drive, B&B and buses.

Race entry is open now on the Early Bird and website has been given a facelift. Rock and roll :p

Any idea on numbers signed up for this? Haven't done much running this year, but seeing as its close to me, I would give the 10K a bash if there was a good crowd running to keep motivated near the back:)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭eoin ryan

    Bout 600
Not sure of the ratio yet. But I'll guess 60 : 40 in favor of 10km

Closing date is the 19th of March

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,121 ✭✭✭Fazz

    I'm in for the 10k.

Finally get to blow off the cobwebs with a blast.

No idea on pace, no idea on if this is a hilly 10k or pb potential or what.

    Should be fun! :D

I wouldn't hold out on a PB. BUT I know some who have. All relative i guess.
Yes there are hills. You get a great view from the top of a hill...
Enjoy the atmosphere and scenery and the course

Registration will be in Amphibian King, Bray on Sat
and at the Gaol on Sunday
    Entries closing on Monday 19th

    Hi Eoin,

Is registration available at the Gaol on the day and if so what time does it open/close? The website says registration must be made in Amphibian King Sat afternoon or early Sunday morning.

    Also, the website says:

    "Race Day Schedule

    10km convicts - Walkers & Runners

10km walkers & runners will start at 10.50am"

I'm running the 10km so 10:50 is my start time?

BTW, summer time kicks in next Sat night so hopefully not too many people will turn up an hour late for the race  Might be worth mentioning in an email if you're sending one out this week.

    Cheers,

    Ben

    Hi Ben

There is an email going out to all the competitors on Wed with ALL details. Thanks for reminder about clocks (it was on my mind all day that i was missing something. Ah, the release...)

    On the web it says
Reg in Amphibian King Bray on Sat
and reg in Wicklow Gaol on Sunday morn 8am to 9.45am sharp.

You can enter race on Sat in Amphibian King between 2pm and 5pm
There will be no entries taken on Sunday at the Gaol

The 10km is starting at 10.35am NOT 10.50am (I've requested this to be changed immediately on website).

    Hope that helps :)

I welcome any suggestions on a tougher road half marathon course on this isle.

Organisation and water stations well manned. Support good too
Fab conditions also. Well done all

First run of any kind for me in about 2 months, first race in about a year. As a consequence, a slow and somewhat painful 10K (maybe I should have picked a flatter course to ease me back in:D) followed. That being said, it was very enjoyable, great atmosphere (the weather helped too) and very well organized to be fair.

:D Thats brought a smile to my face. Congrats Joe. Reward for your hard efforts in training. Terrific splits there, despite the terrain. Hope you reward yourself with a few bevvies.

Great race and what a day for it!

    10km mini report:

Fast start for 500m, gradual rise then to 2k ish and then rolling before 8-9k shows up a nice hill to finish!

Went into this race not knowing what pace to go at. Haven't done any race pace work so didn't know where I was at.
I'd a soft PB of 39:30 at last years CK Tri - though that was short so talking 40min's ish. Never done a 10k run.
So went into this pretty confident of a PB, but knowing it was hilly/rolling so not the easiest.

I started at the front, had Mark Horan and Colin Bolger for company so nice fast runners as bench marks.
kept within 1-2 seconds of them up the 2km climb but then proceeded to get dropped on each of the downhills on the rolling section.
This went from km2 to km6 give or take and they took time out of me each section and pulled away.

They really opened up on the downhills, I looked down at my watch and saw 3min/km pace so eased back. Didn't want to push too hard and burn out early.
They had notable better technique descending though, really banked the pace and were clearly able to push on.

So come km3-4 they were 20-30sec's ahead and I was on my own in 6th being chased.
Kept pace consistent, reached the 6.5km water station and carried on. Nice flat bit before turning and climbing for around 1-2 k again.
Pace slowed, at the turn around I saw Mark was in 2nd and chasing hard, Colin ahead of me by around 1min so tried to up pace on last km.
10th KM was a fast downhill finish, nice respite after previous 2km and chance to push it to end.
7th place was chasing me but I had a little gap so managed to hold on.

Across finish line in 37:05 for a decent PB on a hard course.
Be pretty confident of beating that nicely on a flat course that's for sure.
But happy with the race, enjoyed it and the day.
I may have been a little conservative, looking at pace and backing off a little so as to save it. Saying that the climbs at end weren't easy so probably helped!

A real nice course imo, fast with no harsh turns, kept going. Few climbs and rolling sections but good fun.
Well marshalled, well organised and enjoyable race.

Mark Horan finished 10sec's off winner in 35:12. Pretty savage time for the course.
Colin less than 1min behind in 35:57 and myself over 1min back then.

Nice way to dust off the race cobwebs!

    Two reasons:

    1. One for GMT and the other for BST ;)
    2. Balance :p

Fantastic running Abhain. Great time on a tough course. The hills towards the end were hard going, the last one was a killer. Good atmosphere, well organised,a lot of volunteers and guards around the course. An enjoyable but tough race, not one for PB's.

    Thanks.
It was a great team effort, months of planning and the weather was a big big big bonus....

    Congrats Abhainn.
someone said to me when you came through the finish that "he ran like he was trying to get away from his mother in law"

A good race for knocking off the cobwebs and getting you in the mood for the rest of the season
