Any opinions on a well spec'd 5 series diesel, 07, msport, leather, btooth, auto, etc Vs a well spec'd passat cc 08 or 09(lane/park assist, dsg, leather, btooth etc)

I know the bm is prob the better car but they are common. I like the interior on the passat, havnt driven one yet.

Any thoughts people??

Thanks

passat cc interior is such a nice place to be, one of the nicest i've sat into (not driven though)

Don't know what its like to drive - but a 2.0tdi with 170bhp going through the front wheels might become tiresome.
The 520d is more powerful (mildly) - on the looks side maybe not all there compared to the CC. You do however benefit from an extra seat and more headroom with its bigger cabin.
I'm slightly biased as I own a diesel Bmw saloon which has won me over for the time being! Have had other BM's with v8 petrols and I guess you become a creature of habit over time.

Definitely the CC. Not as common as the 5 and the DSG box is great

I love the look of the CC. Reminds of the merc cls. It is only a 2+2 though. Relatively rare.

The 520d is fast becoming the new corolla/avensis of irish roads. But it is more practical than the CC. Bigger boot, 2+3. Has the BMW badge that will make it easier to move on to Paddy when you are sick of it.

Newer CC has 3 seats in the rear. Its a tough decison IMO..

The cc is more practical for my needs as the back seats go down which they dont in the 5. The 5 Vs 4 seats doesnt bother me as well as my current car is strictly a four seater too. The 5 is a 530d by the way, but still think I prefer the cc with the right spec. Seats are very nice in the cc too

I'd probably go for the passat as the interior is nicer and they're still a current model. I really like dsg too.

I wouldnt drive either tbh but the Passat looks like your grandad in a tracksuit and runners while BM, good as it is, just makes everyone else think you're a w@nker. Tough call :p

It's a 530d - you're comparing apples and oranges with the CC so! Huge difference in power and desirability. What sort of spec is on it? seats?
As for it being a current model the cc replacement is on its way saw an article on it the other day.

A 2007 BMW 530D M-Sport easily beats a VW (skoda) Passat (superb) any day of the week for sure..

with the vw at least you wont be parked when the snow comes,, thats if the engine dosent fall out first..

Snow Ireland 2-3 wks a year? There's 52 of them in a year. Snow needn't be an Irish buying concern. Why would you sacrifice driving pleasure and handling over a 2-3 week non-guaranteed event.

Either will be sh1t on summer tyres, good on winters. I'd take the BMW - it's an all round better car, and just looking at the Passat makes me feel claustrophobic. Plus, I think the squashed saloons are very 2006 builder.:)

Ah more VW love on boards I see!

You know what, I'd actually be tempted to take the Passat. The CC is a stunning piece of design.

What would you take instead?

Beats it at what exactly? Engine excluded....

My current car has the 2.0d engine fitted to the current 5 series. Ive had it since 20k miles with full bm history and the timing chain snapped at 75k and bm didn't want to know so bm reliability is not a selling point over vw in my book

I personally prefer the looks of the M-Sport over the Passat, nicer interior and supposedly a better drive. I think the BMW has more room inside and a bigger boot, not too sure about that though.

Refinement, comfort, handling, roadholding, economy, resale value, driver satisfaction,

PS, you can't exclude the engine because the Passats tractor like vibrations can't be overlooked.

Unfair comparison really.

The acid test would be to compare both with 200K miles under their belt. The 5 would be silent whilst the Passat would sqeak and rattle your teeth out.

Just my experience.

PPS rumours are saying that the 520d for next year will have a 4 pot twin turbo 218 bhp 2 litre.

I always did wonder why BMW never put the engine from the 123d into the 5er anyway..

CC has a good looking but poor quality interior. The e60 has an ugly but high quality interior.

The e60 is technically superior in every way but has a bit of an image problem.

My 2 cents :pac:

that twin turbo diesel 2 litre is already out and is the new 525d.
The 525d used to to be a 3 litre engine but now is a 2 litre just to make things more confusing!

Yeah I heard that it was out in the newer 5 series however reading about the new 3 series which is due to shown to the general public this Friday, it said that the 325d will keep the 3.0 straight six diesel with 204bhp. Why not put the 2.0 twin turbo into the 3 series?323d?

I have a 530D and love it. Will be looking at 535 (same engine) in a few hopefully, or an A6 3.0 quattro.

Id take the CC over a 520d but would take a well spec'ed MSport 530d over the CC no problem. As mentioned they are not on the same playing field at all.
