Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of having a free Ireland

Given the history of Fine Gael, and that of their predecessor Cumann na nGaedhael, I wouldn't be surprised. But in honesty, many Commonwealth nations identify as independent republics, such as India or South Africa, and don't bare any allegiance to the British Monarch. Martin McGuinness' remark that re-entering the Commonwealth would mean that the "Queen of England would have precedence over the Irish President" is the sort of uneducated nonsense you'd expect from an "ex"-IRA Sinn Féiner. Saying that I wouldn't be for re-entering the Commonwealth, unless the Commonwealth offered a common-market (like the EU) between Commonwealth member-states.

Gay Mitchell has said he would be "positively disposed"

Yup, that's how I see his candidacy going on the 27th too...

Welcome to 2006 - when he said it then too and ever since!
In fact he's willing to have a British head of state running Ireland again anyway!

    For example, see: http://ansionnachfionn.com/2011/08/01/gay-mitchell-right-wing-conservative-christian-and-president-of-ireland/
Gay Mitchell has already suggested that the British head of state should become the head of state of any new all-Ireland nation (i.e. we should cease to be a republic – hardly making him a suitable candidate for the office of the president of that republic) and expressed opinions in the aftermath of the Lisbon Treaty referenda that Irish voters should not be given a say in these matters (i.e. we are too stupid to decide things best left to our masters – very democratic, I’m sure).

In 2006, he caused a stir with his comment at the annual Michael Collins-Arthur Griffith commemoration in Glasnevin cemetery that the Irish government should consider a role for the British monarch in a new all-Ireland state.

Well we are part of the IMF Commonwealth at the moment and Christine Legarde takes preceedent over our own President and Taoiseach, so is it really that big of a jump, not that I agree with it.

The poor delusional dope has no idea how irrelevant he is. I'm looking forward to election day just to see his face when he realises how badly he has performed.

In all fairness it won't make a difference what Gay Mitchell says he'll do because he isn't going to be President

For Presidential Election it's been decided to have one main thread. All others relating in any way to the election will be closed.
Please note that you can post in threads in the Election forum too
