Are these any good or are they just too heavy with the 4x4 for a 1.6 making it sluggish?

Corolla boredom and crappy interior with good grip.

I don't think it's got much going for it unless you live in the sticks and need good grip

just wondering really. I guess they'd be handy in the snow? but then that would only depend on your tyres?

    You'd still need winter tyres.

Fuel consumption is a bit higher too in general.

Nothing really bad, it's just a Jap bland box

As above. Awful looking aspirational car for wannabe rally drivers.

They're not "sluggish" just not "fast" in any way. It'd be grand for generally tippin around and the 4wd is nice to have. As long as you don't try and pretend it's a WRX one because it never will be. But there's nothin really wrong with getting one if you want one but can't/ don't want to insure/tax the 2 litre , they're grand cars.
You're probably better off having a "boring" 4wd car that at least has some advantage in bad weather and on bad roads then a boring FWD car that doesn't even have that.

Why pretend its a WRX when you can pretend its an STi? :p
OP if you're looking for power then dont buy one. If you're looking for something with a bit of grip for the winter then it should be alright.

    You'll pay for it though!

They drink petrol and are dog slow, really slow.A 1.2 Fiesta would smoke it, I saw it :D

Friend at work had a 05 one and it took fuel like a turbo petrol, he got rid of it pretty fast and got a 1.4 MG ZS instead, it's noticeably faster ( that's just how slow the 1.6 Subaru is ) and gets 40mpg easy.

The reason they're so cheap is basically because no one wants them, who wants a car that is slow and drinks fuel?

If you want something cheap and fast, buy a Corolla T Sport.

190bhp, ok on fuel, insurance etc.

mmmm. its only a 3 door though...I'm trying to look for something bigger (5door/saloon)..will need it in about a month!haha! currently have a 1.4 civic (90bhp), so it looks it'll have to be a 1.6 at least to get any bit of nippiness out of a bigger car. can't afford the tax and insurance of anything bigger really.it kills me cos id love to have something nice. And I don't fall into the into the boy racer type either!:(

They are not quick cars, over a year ago I posted here about a 4WD 1.6 impreza for my gf and myself because we were living up the snowy hills at the time so we bought one, great grip, my poor old Volvo S80 at the time couldnt go anywhere and sat snowed in while the impreza took us about. It's not a bad car at all and got me to spar and back everyday to get the milk. Sold it on maybe 6 months later so she could have a smaller car as it was too big according to her. I wanted her to keep it.

if I had 5k I'd buy a nice clean Audi A4 1.8T in a heartbeat but I don't. would love one of em. Insurance would be a killer though. tax not much better.

I'm not looking for breakneck power either.just something nippy as the roads are mostly 80kph.
