No deals. They are the same price everywhere.

Apple products tend to be a fixed price..

.. so you're not likely to get a cheaper price depending on retailer etc.

If you can get down to Belfast, buy one there and you'll save maybe €30 (although you'll like spend close to that on petrol).

If you know somebody going to america, and they're in a state with little or no sales tax, and they dont mind not declaring it in customs on the way back you could possibly save yourself about 100 quid on the price.

but thats a lot of variables.

The refurbs from the Apple store can be priced low. The 16GB sometimes showing up for €279 I believe.

Getting an iPad2 for a teen for Christmas. He hasn't had a Wii or a PS, something I'll still be hearing about on my deathbed, and wondering what I need to get?

On the Apple site it's €479 for a 16G and €579 for a 32G with Wfi, incl delivery, no cover - optional at €39, free engraving!

Which one should I get please for watching movies, doesn't need to leave the house?

I'd nearly prefer to go to a store here and get it, which I'm assuming from this thread is the same price.

Yes it's the same price in the shops, though you won't get the engraving service ( who would want too :pac: )

plus its easier to return if it has a fault. Go to an authorised apple reseller for the best advice ;)

sorry to barge in in someone elses thread but Im wondering about this too. I want to get one for other half for xmas but I dont know which to get. He saw the Ipad 1 and loved it. All I think he would want it for is games like yatzee, poker, emails facebook and various apps. I dont really know anything about these but am thinking of getting him an ipad 2 with 3g and 32gb. can somwone give me basic breakdown of what it does and if it will suit his needs. thank you!

The differences between the iPad 1 and iPad 2's are essentially the cameras, with the latter having two.

The other differences are between those with 3G (as in, a SIM card that connects to a mobile phone network for data) and those with only WiFi (can only connect to the 'net where there is WiFi).

The final difference is storage size - 16Gb & 32Gb. The bigger the GB, the more movies/pictures/music/games that can be stored on it.

So it is really a question of what the user wants - to take it on the road, or only use it at home? To take photos and video-calls, or not? To store loads of data, or not?

For starters you can only buy an ipad 2. ipad 1 is long gone.

best version is prob the cheapest 16gb wifi version. I have one and it is sufficient.
Ya gotta remember what you will realistically use it for - and that is browsing, emailing and a bit of video watching on the road.
Its not a camera and it is not a replacement pc - not great for work and not even that good at long letter writing.

The 3g versions are too darn expensive for the addition of a simple sim card, and anyone who has an ipad is gonna have a smart phone with free tethering anyway so mobile internet can be accessed that way.

The channel islands sell them for 21% cheaper than every where else if you know anyone going.

€50 cheaper refurbished from what I can see in apple.ie store for wifi only. Would it be better to but new for extra €50 ?

Speak for yourself. I don't have a smartphone yet have a 3G iPad2. For a lot of people, the iPad is about simplicity and phone tethering is a complication too far...

So for a young teen playing some games at home, watching videos, music storage, internet, and it won't be leaving the house.......a 16G is sufficient?

(Kenno90, the "free engraving" comment came with an exclamination mark. Agreed!)

I'd go to 32GB. 16 fills up very quickly.....

I think Ill have to go 3G with mine. we dont have any wifi access at home so Ive no idea how it would be used otherwise! we'll prob use it 70% at home and 30% away. Can I just ask stupid question, if I have 3g that means I can connect anywhere anytime?!

Please excuse my ignorance with this. Does the 3G version allow for the use of say a Metor 3G fob (or what ever the stick is called :o) to access the internet? I mean, do you have to buy the 3G one to use a fob or till the wifi one allow for this too?

No, it uses a microsim similar to that used in a phone, only it is data only. There is a slot at the side of the device that pops out to insert the card. (Heaven forfend that Apple's style aesthetic be sullied by something sticking out!! :p) Most phone companies give them out free and you just load the microsim up with credit.

AS long as you can get a 3G signal. it would be worth trying a few sims in the house to make sure you can get a signal.

Thank you! Finally, apart from a case, do I need anything else on christmas morning that I should get in advance? i.e. in order to use it.

Right so, a normal 3G sim from any monile provider, o2, Vodafone etc would do it (if there is a good quality 3G signal)?

Not sure it would work in my own place. Its in a forest, halfway up a mountain in Leitrim. Rural electricifation only came in in 2009 :p
