Service Engineer Interview

    Hi, have an interview for service engineer job next week, its years since i did an interview - have been self employed for last 2 years, and was with previous employer for 5 years. Any idea on what type of questions might be asked???

    They will not want to spend much on retraining so they will be looking for a near exact skill match from your previous roles to the new role. I do not know how employers treat self employed but a few testimonials or contacts with customers might be in order if you can get some of your customers to vouch for you in the last 2 years, but you might want to keep your job application under your hat for business reasons so this might not be possible.

    You'll be asked why did you apply? What do you know of the company? What can you bring to the organisation? Why you left previous employments. Possibly why you want to return to employment, they will be anxious to know will you leave if the good times roll again......

    It is unfortunate that Irish employers tend to go for the highest qualified candidate, ignoring the long term fact that more qualified people will leave if the company is not big enough to promote a person to a higher role or grow them into one. I have known of several cases where highly qualified people were hired as technicians and used company resources and benefits to further their education then left the company when they didn't get promoted fast enough....an over qualified candidate can be just as badly fitted to a job as an underqualied one.

    If you haven't done so already, write down answers to questions such as strengths, weaknesses, what are your favourite parts of a job, how you like teamwork, how you improved something at work, how you handled a difficult person etc. Also they will be looking for your attitude to safety and diversity in the workplace etc. Try and think about how you would describe their product etc. Practice answering these questions with a friend, in front of a mirror of recording onto a laptop etc until you get the voice, pace, tone and personal mannerisms etc under control. Learn to SMILE. I was told after several failed interviews for technical positions that I do not smile enough and my lack of enthusiasm for technical matters was too obvious......If possible you must learn to hide your fears, if any.

    What type of Service Engineer?

    I have been a service Engineer for the last 14 years in many different disciplines in Ireland/UK/Australia.

    Reprographics
    Pathology Diagnostics
    Nuclear Diagnostics
    Nuclear Medicine


    Also last few years was working at a supervisory level so at the other side of the interview table.
