I'm have issues downloading anything on my laptop. When I try is says unidentified publisher and won't run the file or if it does start to download it says file corrupt. Problems started about 3 months ago. I had Norton anti virus at the time but it failed to update. Got onto Norton support and after about several attempts, the guy solved the problem by remote access. Everything was fine for about a month. Norton is now out of date and I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials no problem. It worked fine for a month but now it will not update. I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall but download failed. It will download but fails while install saying file corrupt. Anything else I try to download also fails with the unidentified publisher message. I'm using windows Vista and Google Chrome, Have tried IE8 but cant download on that either. Have no anti virus at the moment. Any suggestions?

It's hard to say with the information given. It sounds strange that it's with downloads from Microsoft and Norton. It's possible there is some malware or virus causing issues.

I assume you're ok to access most sites on the internet? Have you noticed any new toolbars you didn't install or has your homepage changed?

Did you un-install Norton before installing MSE?

Running more than one anti-virus product at the same time can really affect the operation of a pc.

    windows vista......

look into properly removing norton and MSE.
then once they are correctly removed, install MSE.

Ya I can access most sites on the internet and haven't any changes or new toolbars. The guy from norton that done the remote access said I had download issues from my service supplier (UPC). When I contacted them they said that they do not block sites but hours after i contacted them the download issues resolved.

I un-install Norton before I installed MSE. MSE was running fine for about a month and then said it needed to update but the update failed and now 3 days later I can't download anything

in terms of your antivirus question i would suggest Avast or avG(FREE EDITIONS)
Install Malwarebytes also and run a check on your system.

when thats done you could start the computer in safe mode and connect to the internet and try doing whatever it was you had trouble with.

You should avoid AVG, absolute garbage, Avast is ok, but I would uninstall MSE and reinstall it from the Mircosoft site. May work, its the best-least annoying free AV out there.

I tried both AVG and Avast but cant download them, says unidentified publisher and wont down load. Have un-install MSE and tried to reinstall it but it starts to download but when it starts to install phase it stops saying file corrupt

Try combofix in safemode. Then run malwarebytes afterwards

Install MSE and do a full scan.

That is not good, those installers are likely digitally signed. It could be that their downloading corrupt though, try downloading the installers on another machine, and see if they install. It could be a problem with your network adaptor drivers corrupting files, but try downloading installers on another machine and copying them over to confirm its a software or hardware issue

I tried this but it won't run the scan in combofix, again say unidentified publisher. can't download MSE in safemode either. I ran CCleaner earlier today. Beginning to think I have a virus
