    Howdy Folks,

Looking for some suggestions. I have a Fiat - It breaks, a lot!
Ive managed to secure a loan for 7K and Fiats worth about 1K.

Im going yaris on their reputation and running costs. I cant afford to rebuild a car every few months like the current one!

Im looking for something sensible but perhaps something thats more male & 25 rather then female and 60!

    All suggestions welcome!

Of course some peoples experience will differ but the OP has clearly stated that his is extremely unreliable and would like a change.

+1 for the swift friend of mine had one and their good fun

One of these are wayy better than any yaris in my eyes. Im a fella and would have no problem driving a mini in certain colour combos
    (and ladies love them)

    thanks for replies,

I have driven Swift. Its a great little car to drive but the interior is so small and dark. Not somewhere I could see me wanting to spend much time.

Plus if I was going 1.6 Id be throwing sensible out the window and going for an MX5!

P.S. I glad your fiats magic, all mine did was make my money dissapear!

What about a Clio/Polo/Ibiza? All much better looking cars in my opinion. I know the Yaris is only a 1 litre but I think it'd be worth the step up to 1.2 so you wouldn't have to drive... a Yaris! Take a look at these...

Thats 7K for an old model clio!
I do like the polo though, its a #2 runner

A year newer and Diesel, would cost nothing to run?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2573132

Or a 07 petrol that would leave you with 1k in your wallet
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2448403

hasnt been cleaned for the photos which would really annoy me but it could well be a clean car.

OP if your not in any huge rush i suggest you take a good few models for a test drive and anything you do like get checked over well. 7k will buy you a very well looked after car

My sister had the 5 door version of that. Moved well when it had a few revs, solidly built, reliable and well specced. I really liked driving it.

Id love to get the GTI one, loads of them over in the UK for very little. They look really nice with the twin pipes at the rear.

Guy at work drives one. Cool little car. Nice and subtle too.

Gearboxes go in them swifts ... ring any gearbox place and they'll have a recon box on the shelf because of demand. I think its noisey bearings problem.

    How does a Fiesta sound?

what about a colt? Nippy enough and cheap to run..

altho its not great for speeding on the motorways it can keep up. theres also a 1.3,1.5petrols which would be better on a motorway, also a 1.5diesel.

think the 3door looks better than 5 door.

    Heres a 2010, asking less than 8k... http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mitsubishi/Colt/1.1-INVI/201140204883984/advert?channel=CARS

If I that kind of money to spend I would be going swift all the way, they are a serious little car. Hopefully my next.

However if you want reliability go for the a polo, I have one, albeit a 00, I've had it for 2 years and nothing serious has ever gone wrong with it. Pedal box went but my Dad is handy with a welder so it cost me nothing.

The gearbox in the 1.1 colt has a bit of a reputation too

Reputation for what? Only thing i noticed was having to be fully stopped before selecting reverse to avoid a crunching sound

For 7k yad get a decent focus or fiesta?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Had to get one done on warranty just after they came out, dealer had done a few at that stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭mowhawk

So why do you think that the Yaris commands such a high price second hand?

Simply because it's the best supermini around, both in reliability and low maintenance costs.

You might buy a cheaper car but in the long run you will pay more.

I happily pay more not to have to sit in a Yaris, drive it or look at it sitting in the drive like a big pudding. Here's a Mini Cooper with air-con and leather asking for €8K.

    Alternatives to a Yaris?

Burning slowly to death. Its quicker than the death by boredom that a Yaris offers but much more enjoyable.

No car should be able to engage reverse gear without coming to a stop.

Reverse generally has no synchromesh, a crunch is not uncommon at the best of times on many cars. Putting a car into reverse when it is moving (presumably forward) and not expecting a crunch is a tad ambitious.

My last polo didn't do that, the other 2 I've had did though. Same engines and years. Strange when I went for no crunch to "what the hell was that?"!

oh right... well i mean i have to come to a complete stop... was able to do it in other cars when it was rolling a little bit... e.g. golf,lanos,micra...

Also when engaging reverse it usually wants you to select first before going into reverse... eg... stopping in second gear and going straight to reverse from there might not work without a crunch... it wants you to select first and then reverse to avoid crunch...

Not a major issue just delays things by about a second.

Very little cost difference in running a 1.2 vs. a 1.6, in fairness.

Well that depends on the car and the amount of mileage that is done.

    10000 miles at 50mpg and €1.50 a litre would cost €1363.83
    10000 miles at 40mpg and €1.50 a litre would cost €1704.78

    http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.shtml

Thats a difference of €340 plus tax would cost more... not a huge difference i suppose to someone spending 8k on the car like the OP

Any 1.2 I've had has only really averaged early to mid 40s at best. My 1.6 cars are basically the same...it's only slightly higher tax. The extra little bit of power makes them safer all round IMO. Only in Ireland would we be talking about a 1.6 as being 'mad'...haha!

Work away mate, you might try lighting your cigarettes with €5 notes too, that also looks cool, its your money after all. (btw I am assuming that you smoke, apologies if you don't.)

P.S. 1.33, 100 hp version with rear discs, traction control, six speed, stability control, limited slip diff, built in sat nav, bluetooth, iPod, air con, emergency brake assist, abs, and a few other things that just won't come to mind at the minute. It still cost me less than a basic Mini with nothing, new. BTW the Mini diesel has a Yaris engine in it, enough said.

P.P.S. Factory alarm, central locking with dead locking, alloys, parking sensors, fog lamps, and I just know that there are still a one or two more nice bits that I can't think of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The MINI only used the 1.4 D-4D for a while, they switched to the PSA 1.6 engine a good while ago

What trim level Yaris did you get, are you living in ireland?
