Best places to stay in Rome

Going to Rome at the start of November and have started looking for central accomodation.Blown away by the price of what would be considered "mid-range" hotels:eek:
Have heard that some good areas to stay are:

    Close to Spanish Steps
    Via Veneto
    Piaza Navona
    Near Trevi Fountain

Some of the more budget places seem like dives so want to book something that will be ideally nice, clean, central and in a safe area. Was hoping to stay within a budget of €120 per night for 2 but I'm starting to think that might not be realistic:confused:

Would really appreciate if anyone had some advice from previous experience or some recommendations. There is just such an overload of information on the web, it would be easy to miss some of the gems I'd say:p

Have heard some mention of the Trastevere area and was wondering if that might be a better bet as it seems slightly less touristy, which usually brings down the price a bit, but also seems to be within walking distance of the main attractions.

    Thanks in advance!

I'd be interested in this too. I've been to Rome twice and both times stayed around Termini-no doubt, thats where you get the best deals. Even though the area isnt exactly posh (graffiti etc) its safe from my experience at least and within walking distance to everything. Its not the postcard Rome that you see in other areas, but its budget accomodation in a really accessible area. Hotel des Artistes is where I stay, and I like it. Basic, cheap, we got it for about €75 per double room per night off peak.

We usually stay around the Piazza Navona/Campo di Fiori area as it is close to where we like to eat & drink at night. This area is within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Forum, Colosseum, via del Corso, Spanish Steps, Vatican, Trastevere etc. I would suggest looking for an apartment rather than a hotel. Besides the freedom an apartment gives you, it works out much cheaper than a hotel. We have used Italy-Accom.com, Romecityapartments.com and Rental In Rome - no problems with any of these agencies.

Stayed near Termini once. Although Rome itself is quite small and most places are within walking distance, we weren't mad about Termini - there's not much around there to do at night. We stayed up at Via Veneto a couple of times but found ourselves getting taxis to/from Piazza Navona a lot of the time. The restaurants/bars in the Via Veneto area are also more expensive (although, obviously there are exceptions). Trastevere is nice too and lively at night but I wouldn't fancy staying there (again, it's too far away from where we go socialise at night). Enjoy your trip - Rome is FAB!!!:D

Thanks for the advice guys.I think we are going to opt with booking an apartment via italy-accom.com, so thanks for recommendation Pflano. It does seem that you can stay very centrally for much cheaper in an apartment than in a hotel. There are literally no reasonably priced hotels near Trevi Fountain,Spanish steps etc. but lots of lovely apartments. Looks like it will still cost approx €375 for three nights but at least it will be for something worthwhile and not some dull hotel room:)

    Hi,

We stayed here http://www.elegant-apartment-rome.com/schede_map.aspx?id=121&t=2&pid=668116 very close to the Vatican and the perfect location really, they have other smart apartments too that are reasonably prices... gorgeous little apartment in a nice area (which is a heritage site).

You certainly will not get a reasonably priced hotel anywhere near the city - out around the airports there even very expensive.I would recommend stayrome.com have used stayed in their apartments on a few occasions and they were very comfortable plus their an irish company.

Thanks- is the Vatican within walking distance of the other main sites as well ie.Colosseum, Spanish Steps? It seems the apartments are slightly cheaper out that way, but ideally we want to walk as much as possible, and not lose time waiting on transport.

Buy a ticket for the sight seeing bus
    The ticket lasts two days

Just hop on and hop off wherever you want

There is cheap accomadation around Termini and Tiburtini but the areas aren't the best

I stayed here a couple of years ago, and got what I thought was a very fair rate: http://www.hotelgiuliana.com/

It gets good ratings on Tripadvisor, and although it says it's only a ten minute walk from Termini (true enough) it's also only about a fifteen minute walk to the top of the Spanish Steps.

Hotel Aquarium is a nice, decent budget place - actually quite elegant for the 2 stars it's got. Fairly central, a short walk from the Colosseum. I walked to the Spanish Steps from here, to Villa Borghese, the Historic Center, almost everywhere. If budget matters, it's a good option.
