Have a 03 Avensis, engine blew due to timing belt, hadn't been looked after properly (gave car to ex to bring kids around in.... i know.....)

Anyway, couldn't get a 03 Avensis engine anywhere (1.6 petrol), and managed to source a 09 with 60k km on it. (Car show 114K miles)

Got it installed, new clutch and brake pads, car going perfectly now.

Do i need to tell insurance or car registration people what i've done ?

Not looking to sell it on, with that engine hoping for a few more years out of it...
    appreciate your help

    Hi

i have done the same thing with an accord 2 months ago, changed engine, timing chain, clutch etc.
never declared that the engine was changed, put it through the nct no problems.
You are supposed to change your licensing cert as far as i am aware, however i was hesitant as having it listed with an engine change might make it difficult to sell(raises questions).
i was also wondering at the time should the clock reflect the mileage done by the engine or stay as it is,never managed to find an answer to that one.

The clock should definitely stay as it is, as it records the mileage on the car.

@OP - Is the new engine any different to the original one - ie is it more powerful?

I am amazed that the ecu is compatible and other electronics.

What's even more strange is that the timing belt went in it.

All 1.6 petrol Avensii after 2001 are fitted with the VVTI engine which has a timing chain!

Fair play OP on minting your car makes you wonder when you here people trading em because the warranty is about to run out! Have 300km on my clock without even needing new turbos or a gearbox - routine maintenance and lots of oil!
As for your Avensis the 1.6vvti was carried forward from the 99-2003 model to the 04- to 08 model - same power an parts. So no need to inform anyone.
However the 1.6 in the 09 model was more powerful (20hp) so that could become an insurance issue!

Wouldn't the engine number would be different than the one on the book?

Not sure if it's a belt or chain tbh, but whatever it was, it went and blew the whole engine.

The new 1.6 engine definetly feels more powerful, but haven't been on a good run yet. Off to Cork in it later in the week, and will let you know.

The engine number is different now to the one on the book, but since I'm not selling it, do i need to inform anyone ?

The ECU I assume means electronics ? Well, all the correct lights come on, handbrake etc - is this what you're talking about ?

I would say its the 03 to 08/09 model rather than the current model so it would be the same on power. The first Avensis 1.6's in 98 were fitted with the lean burn engine which changed to VVTI with the facelift in 2001.

The 1.6 and 1.8 engines sometimes suffered with a well documented flaw which saw the lower parts of the engine deprived of oil and as a result, engine failure. I would say this might be what happened the OPs car unless it was VERY seriously undermaintained and the timing chain broke. More likely though, it was consuming a drop of oil and was run dry (or nearly dry) or else the design flaw took its toll.

AFAIR Toyota did extend the warranty on cars affected by this to 7 years and something like 100K miles. OP would have been a year late anyway.

It was definetly out of oil :o, so I will bow to your far better knowledge of what went wrong.

Anyway, it's fixed and going better than ever. The same mistakes won't be made again.......

I suppose the next question is cost.....800 for the engine. with the clutch, brake pads, oil / coolant etc, all-in 1700.

To be honest, for now I'm happy, only time will tell if it was the right decision rather than just scapping it (which seemed likely at one stage since these engines proved hard to come by)

If you got an engine with 60k km supplied and fitted and all that other work done for €1700, you did very well in my opinion. I would have thought that 1700 for the engine alone might not be unreasonable.

I'd have it changed on the licencing cert too - it won't cost anything, and it's one less thing to worry about. Re the insurance, i'd tell them too - again, they shouldn't want any more money.

If its going well than hold on to it to get the value out of it, it should be perfect now and realistically if its going fine I would hold on to it for at least 5 years and more if it keeps going.
