    Hi

I am looking at buying a carvan...

Was thinking about a focus van or C4 van

    Can spend between 3-5K

    What would people recommend

What should I be watching out for

    Thanks

I just picked up an 05 astra van with very low miles for a fair bit less then your budget and the astra vans give you more space then normal hatchback based vans.

    I've had a 98, a 99 and a 00 astra van.

Always better than the actual cars in terms of handling and a really useful size.

And No-one messes with you on the road...

    Fav van of all time.

    Thanks for the reply

Do you mean the astras that are like an estate van or like http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/commercials/2603362

if like the one in the link I would def go for it.....what liter are the astras

the newer ones seems to be 1.3 lt which is very low for diesel

Think I would prefer a 1.8 or 2.0 lt as I hear the smaller engines can give alot of trouble?

Yeah the estate car type vans.

The new shape astra's(astra H) use the 1.3cdti fiat unit as well as Opels 1.7cdti. Both are good reliable engines with no common reliability issues. The new model hatchback type ones like in your link use the same engines.

The previous shape(astra G, only available as the estate type van) which is the one I got, from 04 on used the 1.7cdti but earlier models used a couple of different 1.7td/dti engines as well as a 2.0td. None of the older engines, 2.0 included, are as powerfull as the newer cdti engines.

golf mk5 van is super...i had a 05 ran up 200k km on it without a rattle or bump..sold it for 5.5 k so keep your eyes open and you'll find one..
we use the focus vans at work and while nice to drive we find the rear opening hatch useless cos of the way it slopes down..you lose a lot of space

Do car vans have harder wearing suspension or something to set them apart from a stock people carrying version of it?

Like is a Focus Carvan the same as a Focus Hatchback aside from the obvious ie. seats and panels instead of rear windows?

The likes of the caddy or combo cans have heavier duty suspension but the carvans, astra, focus etc are just standard cars with a solid floor and no windows.
