Very much depends on the actual car at that price, rule of thumb wise, small engined Octavias are fairly sh1t compared to a 1.6 petrol Avensis.

Ya was thinking of 1.6. Avensis as they will go forever.few goods deals there but can't get to them as I've no car.any other cars I should look out for

Don't know much about specifics tbh. It's just a general rule I go by ie. cheap and reliable = Japanese.

If you're going Avensis, go for the pre facelift lift model.
Non vvti. Less likely to go wrong.

Mazda 626. Honda accord, pre-02 Nissan Primera, Toyota Avensis, Ford Focus and I wouldn't buy very cheap and old VAG car if reliability is must.

Are you reffering "cheap" to buying or repairing costs? If second, they aint cheap at all.

Reliable yes but the lean burn engine from the Carina E is dog slow though and gears are too far apart imo. VVTi is alot more free reving.

I'd have a look at a 1.8 Honda Accord, can be bought for similar money and the only reason I can think not to buy it over an Avensis is if you need a bit more room.

Cheaper option, but a P11 Primera would suit and shouldn't let you down.
