India and Bangalore Advice

    Hey there everyone,

I wa thinking of going to Bangalore for two weeks next August to work in a spay and neuter project in a place called Ooty (I'm a vet student). The project is run by a UK charity and they feed you, put you up etc so thats fine. However it seems a bit of a waste to goto India for just two weeks, but I'm terrified at the thought of travelling around on my own- by all accounts not a very friendly place to tourists not to mention single European young ladies! Are there any tours/backpacking group trips geared at people in their twenties that anyone knows of? Or good travel agents?

If anyone has any tips I would be most grateful!!

    Ali

I've been going to India alone and with people since I was 20 (and a female European). As long as you're not stupid (wearing tank tops) there's no problem. The hill stations are great places I find as you're not dying of heat and people seem more laid back there. I would agree that India for two weeks is a bit of a waste, but there's no need to join an expensive tour. Just go on one of the big India sites like Indiamike.com and find a travel buddy or something.

    @ dory:

We're finally off on our trip next Monday with India as our first port of call and was just wondering there, as a guy, is there something specific I should be wearing or am I ok with shorts and tee's? My g/f is covering up somewhat but I never thought about it from a guy's perspective.

Shorts and T-shirts scream 'I'm a holidaymaker, rip me off'. You're better off trying to look a bit local, which would mean dressing a bit smart. Outside the main cities men don't wear shorts (and generally don't in cities either). It's not too bad, but you're really setting yourself up for being centre of attention. I find looking hippy helps as they presume you're a broke backpacker. I think long pants would be the best way to go, you can get them for cheap over there and they'd be light ones. Shorts are ok in places like Goa. But as a guy it's not as important.
