Canon - Wireless tethering options?

    Hey all,

Was just wondering if anyone knows about wireless tethering at all? I've figured out how to tether (which wasn't that difficult, to be fair) but I can't really be restricted by a USB wire as I move around far too much (I'd be using tethering for portraiture mostly, indoors but not studio).

I know I could look into just buying a really long USB wire (which I may very well do) but I was wondering if anyone knows anything about wirelessly doing it?

All I can find via Google is a DIY job that leaves a fist-sized contraption of batteries and wireless USB sticks hanging off the camera (I'd rather the USB wire!).

    Cheers. :)

Either get yourself a 5m usb cable or talk to oshead. He has a wireless setup to an IPad. Wireless is very slow though due to the large file sizes involved and its also a much costlier option.

Search for Eye-Fi wireless memory cards and have a read about their capabilities.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Have a read of this thread New Addition to my Workslow. You'll find enough info to get you started plus links to get you further....

I don't think those Eye-Fi cards can work with RAW, can they (I think i read something along those lines somewhere)?

Wow. Oshead I must say hat's off to you, but that's far too much effort and expense for me to justifiable buy into. Probably down the line a little, but right now that's just a lot of cash for wireless tethering, and a lot of additional bits and pieces to be carrying around with you (though the thread is a great insight).

5m USB cable looks pretty appealing right now...

Yeah it works with Raw, jpeg and video files. I have my ipad set to only accept jpegs.

Since writing that post some things have changed. Basically all you need now is your eye-fi card, a suitable camera and the Ipad or Iphone.

Just a word of warning about using the USB. I've wrecked two camera USB mini ports by catching the cable on things. They break very easily. The only fix that canon will do is replace the mother board of the camera and that costs about as much as a second entry level dslr. One solution you could try is one of those extendable usb cables and attach it to your belt. One end to the camera and the other end connected to the 5m cable. If the cable gets yanked it will not tug on the camera.

That seems like a workable way of doing it alright (I was thinking that a cable tugging at the camera would cause a fairly serious injury to it alright).

To be honest, I thought that there'd be some wireless receiver/antenna set or something released by now to accomodate this type of thing. Wireless technology isn't exactly groundbreaking anymore, so... I don't know. I probably just won't bother tethering at all. I don't NEED to do it, but it would've been a nice novelty all the same, and useful, too.

I have the Canon Wireless transmitter on the 1D MK and its great. Great in the studio for teathering or out at events. You can control the camera remotely also with live view, so thats kinda cool.

    ................ But............... it's expensive.

I'm sure the build quality is great and all, but that's a really big but..... It also runs on a G network at 2.4Ghz, so apart from being slower, it's relatively susceptible to interference from all kinds of stuff.

I have a similar setup for my 7D ... used it once or twice just to test.

I'm faster shooting and transferring the card via card reader than wirelessly transmitting - then again - it is pretty cool to shoot and its transferred straight away.
