Advice on replacing stolen SLR

I posted before about my SLR, which was stolen when I was travelling. I recently got confirmation that they'll settle the claim for a certain amount.

I'm left with two choices:

1. Pay the €150 excess, replace my Canon 400D with a 550D and replace the Sigma lens, which requires paying an extra €100
2. They issue me with a cheque for €1000.

So I'm left with getting a (nearly) like-for-like replacement or using money to buy second-hand. As I've been considering upgrading for various reasons, I'm wondering whether I should take a certain cash hit and upgrade by buying second-hand. Maybe I can stretch to a budget of €1200-2000.

I would be getting a Canon and would like video capability.

What advice would you guys have, and where would be a reputable place to purchase?

Buy a Canon 7D, price is 1499 in Birmingham's and probably same in Conn's camera shops. You will probably pay at least a 1000 for a s/h lens to go with it.

Take the money and go the second-hand route, would be my advice. I'm sure you'd get sorted with a 60d and lens for €1,000 or less.

I agree with this option. Go onto www.Adverts.ie and you will pick up a good bargain. I have the 60D and it has the video option you want. It's a cracking bit of kit.

Ian Kerr comes highly recommened from searching through various photography forums in Ireland and the UK. i nearly bought off him until he told me he was out of stock on the 500D, but luckily i found Simply Electronics and got the 550D for less Ian's 500D pricing.

I had an up to date pricing list from Ian, i'll try route it out.

Ian Kerr, UK based eBay seller, knows as 'Kerso' on eBay. Generally highly recommended here and elsewhere. You can request a price list directly from Ian on kerso1123@msn.com.

The last price list I got listed the 7D body only at UK£1099 but check for current price as it varies with exchange rate.
