I purchased a Canon 50mm 1.8f lens and was looking to get a UV filter for it.

I am having problems finding a 50mm UV filter and was hoping somebody could clear this up for me.

Is there a 50mm UV filter available to buy or do I need to purchase a 52mm UV filter and a step down ring?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

im pretty sure you need the 52mm filter as the 50mm lens is the focal length and not the diameter of the actual lens.

Simply Electronics sell the 50mm 1.8 with a 52mm filter for 100e so thats where the info comes from.

Filter size for that lens is 52mm, no step down ring required. 50mm is the focal length ;) Don't worry, it'll all start to make sense eventually :)

A lenses focal length and it's filter thread size are two different things. The 50mm has a 52mm filter size. To help you out in future, there's a symbol usually printed on the lens somewhere, and this tells you the filter size.

On the 50mm f/1.8, the filter size and filter symbol are printed on the front of the lens. In this picture (stolen from a google search) you can see the symbol (which looks like a O with a line through it) and "52" beside it (on the bottom at the front in the lens):

This is usually printed somewhere on a lens, and tells you that lenses filter size. But yeah, to answer your actual question, as has been sad above, for that lens you need a 52mm filter :)

Also, for future reference incase you care, the distance printed on the side of the lens is the lenses minimum focus distance (so if you stand 1.5foot away from something, you can focus on it, but that's as close as you can go with that lens. If you stand 1foot away from something, the lens will either hunt continuously for something to focus on, or it will focus on something in the background).

    Hope that's some use.
