R9 supertri driver

    Folks,

Im looking at picking up a Taylormade R9 supertri driver over the R11.
Main reasons are; 1) cheaper price, 2) I dont want to be the knob on the first tee box with the big fancy white driver whacking it out of bounds..

I'm looking @ 10.5 degree and undecided on shaft. About 100-107 mph swing speed.

There are a few R9 options.
    R9, R9 460, R9 supertri, R9 TP driver.

Has anyone got one of these drivers and what are their views on this model range.

Would it be rated as good as the R11? and what price would I expect to pick up a good secondhand one for?

    Thanks in advance..

    Hi irish Bloke,

I have the R9 Super tri and they are a lovely job IMO. Bullet head is very easy to have confidence over and having tried a good few drivers over the years (on tests not buying them), I feel that it is a great job for the mid handicapper.

I have a swing speed of 98 and I use the Aldila Voodoo SVS6 shaft which is a little stiffer than the one that comes with the R9 as standard. Would defo recommend getting a pro to check which shaft would suit you best before buying.

I have never played round wih the weights because you are just correcting a flaw in your game and i think once you start tinkering with the likes of that, you will always be playing round with them.

I have the 9.5 degree and I always played 10-10.5 before but it has a pretty high launch so i would consider the 9.5 before buying.

Try one out and see what u think. Everybody is different but I would imagine you wud like it.

Agree with you too about the white shaft brigade, amount of absolute tossers you see that would hit it further with a hurl unveiling their new driver with no skuff marks anywhere round the sweet spot:D. 400 euro does not buy you a 300 yard drive down the middle.

Let us know how you get on.

    Thanks for the reply Tubby.

What kind of money would I expect to pick up a new or good secondhand one for considering they are the previous model and all the hype seems to be with the R11.

Im looking to change a low draw to hook into a high draw with the adjustibility of this club. I hear you with tinkering, but I'm one of those guys who just cant resist im afraid..:D

Where is the best place to pick one up online?

I have no link with the place or anything but I think you cant beat Golfstyle in Galway. Online, you end up buying a club and are stuck with the one you have. Declan Cunningham always gives great second hand prices (and isnt that dear with his stock) so you could trade your club and would have plenty of R9's there I would imagine.

Not sure how much it would be but I imagine that with the R11 out now, you should pick one up for 150 handy enough.

They're not so bad. We simply get the cool driver at a cheaper price when they realise they're crap. ;)

Got the R9 supertri through onlinegolf.co.uk recently for £150.

Is 9.5deg and came with stock shaft, really liking the club not gained much yardage or changed ball trajectory over previous driver (an old Adams ovation) which broke. However changing it to neutral upright gave me a much more consistent dispersion and is more forgiving on poor swings.

As for shaft cant comment on whether a different shaft would be better. Never been fitted and I dont think I have a consistent enough driving swing for shaft to make a huge difference despite being off single figures.

Whats the difference in hitting a bad drive with a 400 euro driver and a bad drive out of a 50 quid driver??? Gotta love Irish mentality.
Friend of mine has an all white special edition cobra driver, stood up sunday on first tee and pulled it way left, was lucky to find it, plenty of people around the teebox looking, same guy went on to have a 79 gross, doesnt seem like a knob to me.

BTW ive got an r11 myself, i dont look at it as a big fancy white driver though, i just like it regardless of the stigma around them being "fancy"
    Rant over now thanks :)

Oh and the R9 is a great driver, cant go wrong with it really, get the right shaft and you're all set

    True :p
I think what Irish Bloke was getting at is why would someone bother spending €400 on a driver if they can't hit it out of their way - they should spend less on the arrows and use the rest to improve the Indian with lessons.

But my point is why is that person a knob?? And even if that were the case, mostly amateur golfers on here who scuff drives and iron shots here and there so what does it matter if their gear costs a tenner or a thousand euro???

Its the typical thing with a lot of irish, "oh look at that clown spending all that money on clubs/car/wheels/football boots/house" or whatever the case may be, I just never understood it to be honest

Would a change of shaft make that much difference to the R9? I just have the stock stiff shaft in mine.

Depends on the person really, swing type/swing speed and what kinda ball flight ur after etc. If it aint broke dont fix it as they say ;) nice to experiment with different shafts though so you know what way you want it

I use the R9 Supertri and changed from stock shaft to a Project X 7A3. Serious difference to flight and find it a much more consistent driver now. Depends on person but getting fitted for right shaft can make a big improvement.

I think dnjoyce said it right when he said "they should spend less on the arrows and use the rest to improve the Indian with lessons"

Its nothing against anyone using an R11, Its just too expensive and Im not good enough yet to warrent that type of investment.

I dont think its an Irish thing or am I saying its right, but I do know if someone pulled one of those bad boys out on the first tee box, he would have a very big audience and a little snigger if he drove it onto the ladies tee box. Thats some extra pressure I could do without thanks...:)

I think it a bit like buying a yellow Range Rover when you live in a mid terrace house with not a field in sight...;)

They should make them is black too as I like the idea of loft adjustment that the R9 doesent have i believe..
