New motor 30k budget

    hey

Rite guys its time to upgrade the car in the new year. Will be upgrading my wifes car and she is a disabled driver with a tax exemption. We need a tall style vehicle due to her condition. We don't want something as small as a golf plus/nissan note or something like a verso or c-max. The only other options seam to be small SUVs.

It has to be under 2l but we would prefer to have the power of a 2l Diesel
Has to be big enough to fit adults in the back
Cost - circa 30k. Have roughly 10k trade in, 10k in tax rebate and about 10k cash to put towards it. This could stretch to about 15k for the rite motor.

We have crossed the following off the list without test driving them mostly down to looks quasqui, juke, yeti and the ix35

We have test drove two motors so far. Toyota rav4(was a lovely car but only comes in 2l petrol) and the Ford Kuga(lovely car also with 2l diesel engine)
We love the look of the Kuga especially the titanium spec although we prefer the BMW x1 looks wise although not price wise.

What would you guys recommend or would you pick any of the above?
Also how soon would I want to be ordering a new car to have it in January?

Rav4 is also available as a 2.2D4D, though they are expensive. Why does it have to be 2.0 or under?

I dont really rate the BMW, too expensive for what it is.

Pick of the bunch is the Kuga IMO, nice to drive, plenty of poke, and specced well in Titanium spec.

Depending on availability you'd need to be ordering your car now for Jan 2012 delivery. There is some availability on Kuga at the minute so it depends on the colour and spec you want.

As for other options, Nissan XTrail may be worth a look, but I dont think you'll get a new one with your budget.

Does it have to be an SUV? Y0u'll get a nice estate (Insignia comes to mind) for the same money.

It has to be under 2l to qualify for the disabled drivers tax exemption. So the Rav4 is basically out of the running
Also x trail is only a 2l petrol i think.
And an estate would be no good due to height problems. Also don't really need the size of an estate if I could i'd go for a saloon but they aren't tall enough

I've been told ( by a Toyota dealer ) that the Rav petrol is '' a pig on fuel consumption ''.

Have a look at the Mitsubishi ASX, should come in well under budget.

Decent interior specification, but materials are a little cheap. Stonking 1.8TD 150ps diesel under the bonnet, and a front end based on the Evo. Rear view is quite nice too, but I didn't really take to the side view of the vehicle.

My parents bought the new Kia Sedona.

It was one of the view vehicles that could be modified to take a wheelchair and not a van type.

Might be a bit out of budget though.

    The engine was 2.2 too

The Subaru Forester would be my pick of the small SUVs, but it's €35 K. Mind you, so is the Kuga. By the sounds of it, you don't need off-road ability, so you're spending €10K extra for 4WD you don't need.

You didn't say why you crossed the C-Max off your list, 30K would buy you a 2.0 140 Titanium, better to drive and sit in than the base Kuga.

    Skoda Yeti?

    We are loving our Yeti.
Ours cost €29k and we got a lot for that money.

However if your not keen on the looks, VW are refreshing their Tiguan model.
It looks a bit nicer than the pre-facelift.

Seat, I believe will be releasing their Yeti /Tiguan/Q3 crossover very soon.

And I agree, I thought the Kuga looks great.

Citroen also have the DS-4, which is one of the best looking crossovers out there.

As a disabled driver you can get the exemption on a 2l vehicle with vrt and vat not exceeding €9,525. As a disabled passenger you can get exemption on up to a 4l vehicle with vrt and vat not exceeding €15,875. As a disabled passenger you can't be registered to drive any vehicle in the country though. As far as I am aware you can exceed the 2l limit but you have to pay for the excess tax.

As for the C-max we kind of crossed MPV style cars off the list as we don't like the look of them too much, prefer an SUV format. Plus we don't have a young family so it would seam a bit of a waste buying an MPV

OP i was in your position this time last year. Was looking for a car for my mother with disabled exemption. In the end we went for an X1. Its a lovely car all in all although probably not as high a spec as similar priced SUV's.
We test drove 4 or 5 SUVs. Namely Kuga, tiguan, rav4 and quasqui. We didn't go for the rav4 due to the 2.2l diesel, the tiguan seamed to have the poorest resale value and there are very few of them on the roads. Quasqui was the worst of them, although we would have been able to get the top spec we didn't like the 1.5l diesel engine. The kuga came in a close second to the X1. In the end we went for the X1 cause my mother didn't really want a very big SUV she prefered something small and manageable like the X1.

One other one to consider would be the Peugeot 3008. We didn't test it as my family have a thing about peugeots and reliability. The current 1.6l isn't the worst but there is a 2l diesel hybrid coming out soon, not sure on prices but i'd expect it too be around the 30-35k mark.

I dont see how you are tied to under 2 litre.

Take a look at the revenue website for info on it. Mainly part 4 and 5
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/drivers-passengers-with-disabilities-tax-relief-scheme.html

In the long run it doesn't make sense to go over the 2l limit, cause you won't have a hope of selling it on after wards. It sounds great to be able to get free road tax for the year but the next person won't get that so you don't want to have something in the top tax bracket in two years time.

Sorry misread original quote. Didnt see passenger/driver difference.

Your point about top tax bracket & over 2.0L is a bit outdated at this stage.

The non-grand C-Max is barely any bigger than a focus, it's just taller, which sounds like just what you need. Vs the Kuga it'd save you €5K-€10K, so it's a saving not a waste.

Of course, if you just don't like them, fair enough.

(I do have kids, and I think the C-Max is too small, so I have an S-Max.)

True but I meant that people don't really want to buy anything over a 2l due to consumption unless its for a premium car(ie a 2l diesel car will sell a lot quicker than a similar 2.2l).
I'd love a bigger engined car 2.5l plus but I couldn't afford to take a hit on resale for it let alone insure it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Nissan Qashqai+2 1.5dci SVE comes in at just under €30k retail. More powerful 2.0dci seems to have been dropped from the range here.

Thanks for all the replies people

As i said before I don't really want something that looks like a high seated version of a hatchback car(i.e. venga or golf plus) or a small MPV(ie. verso or c-max) cause I don't really see the point of them.
Now i know a 2wd SUV doesn't have much going for it either but at least they have higher ground clearance

Cozzie the 3008 is one to consider. Does anyone know how reliable these are? are they as unreliable as previous Peugeots. And Bazz I would have considered a quasqui if I could get the 2l dci engine. 1.5l would be a bit under powered i'd imagine.

Has anyone ever got a dealership to put in a special order for a larger engined car? Like as far as I know the 2l quasqui is available in england.

according to 'What car' the best small suv is the Vw Tiguin which for a 2.0 tdi 140 bhp is €30000ish or the 110 tdi which is around €27000 its safe spacious reliable and holds its value well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭knifey_spoonie

OP, even though the rule states the car must be under 2.0 in the past i have registered a 2.2 under the drivers scheme. It did require a doctor to write a letter along the lines of, I believe xx car is the most suitable for the needs of the person xx. Now its has been a few years since it was done buts its worth a try. If you want something in the 2.2 bracket.

Also to give you an idea, a 2.2 Rav-4 2WD will return 42-45 real world MPG.

Good choice. Did you go for an xdrive or sdrive model? I quite like the look of the X1 with the giant wheels and the right colour. Unfortunately they don't offer anything near an m version for myself -

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

Make sure you do you'r homework on this,
You do NOT automatically get €9525 off the price of a car.
You DO in fact get UP TO €9525

As far as I know a tax band A or B car is not much use to you if you want to recalim your full benefits.
Tax band C seems to fit this perfectly and at €302 tax per year is not too much for the next owner when selling time comes.

    Have you considered a Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI 4WD Experience = 170bhp

    Tax Band C.
If you could sell your own car privately you could get a good cash deal on one of these.

i went for the sdrive20d. Didn't see the point in shelling out and extra couple of gran for 4wd.
I went for it in silver. Which was a surprise the colour really grew on me after testing a few of them. There is a lovely bronze coloured one but thought it mite be hard to shift on afterwards

Unfortunately sensibility comes into it with colour choice, had been looking for a slightly used white car (it's oddly a metallic colour) but can't find one and would have to buy new (hmm 2 year old black 750 with less than 30k for 60ish or a new one for 160ish). Going used for sure!
Nice to hear you plumped for the extra hp!

I saw somewhere that prices for the new zafira are expected to be around 30k, yet the current model is going to remain on sale for another while and only costs 26k
