New Taxi ID rolled out in Waterford

    <snip>

    So far 30 drivers have signed up to a new sceme is being rolled out in Waterford to allow customers access to a Taxi drivers ID by scanning a bar code with a smart or android phone. Anything that hellps get rid of Bogey taxi drivers is welcome, but is this it?

    On the picture above is the logo of the National Transport Authority. There surprised to see their logo there. My question is, did this Logo help in getting drivers to sign up. For drivers when they sign up, they must sign a waver to some data protection. This bar code will hold 5 pieces of information.

    This bar code will hold no picture, so how do you know what the code is reading is right? Also this code will be in a package containing advertising
    and is permanently placed in the Taxi. So where there are a husband and wife driving on in other cases like minibusses multiple drivers. How do you figure out, who is who.

    It's not a bad idea, but ID can't simply be available to a portion of the public. Not everyone has Smart phones, and how long before its used as Irish only tool by some.

    It seems silly not to include a photo.

    An option on the site to rate your Taxi driver will probably be manna from heaven to some of the racists out there.

    'Shocking' racism towards African drivers, says study

    A Human rights study into claims of racism in the taxi industry in Galway city describes as “shocking” some of the experiences related by African drivers. It also noted a practice, submitted in photographic evidence, of putting Irish flags and symbols on cars driven by Irish or white drivers.

    Examples included experience of racist comments and insults; customers refusing to get into a cab driven by an African driver; customers requesting white drivers from at least one company;

    Whos to stop anyone publishing taxis not to be used?

    Ah come on now. The vast majority of taxi drivers are grand, but some seem to confuse nods with interest in their ramblings.

    In my opinion asking for an Irish driver is not racist, it is just increasing the chances of the clown driving the taxi actually knowing where he was going

    i would get a taxi most days of the week
    a few of the "colored" taxi drivers are good & very friendly
    but some spoil it for everyone -
    1. talking in their native language on the phone all through the taxi ride
    2. twice i was taken "round the city" to increase the fare
    3. being down right rude - too short a taxi ride " you should walk"

    one guy surprised me - a Nigerian gentleman - late 20's in a shirt and tie, driving a black BMW, spotlessly clean and smelling fresh, i complimented him and tipped him well.

    we need more "newish" taxis and well dressed drivers, fresh smelling cabs.
    drives me nuts to see cabbies in track suits~!

    Not by enough to justify putting up with their asinine ramblings and whines.

    Is this the scheme that is unofficial and nothing to do with the taxi regulator ?
