Advice needed - Car purchase

    Hey All,

I've a friend who's looking to buy a car. She's narrowed it down and we went to look at one today - Seat Ibiza.

In my opinion she can get the same car for less money. First search on Carzone brings up this.

She has text the garage of the first car to say she'll offer €3,800 and she'll sort the tax, his counter offer was €3,900 with no tax.

If anyone can see a reason why she shouldn't buy the cheaper one, we're all ears. Bear in mind, she can still offer an even cheaper price for the second car.

    Thanks!

For a start, tell your friend to go in and deal face to face with the dealer. Doing it over text will never get the best deal.

Secondly, they are not the same cars. One is a 2004, and the other 2005, so there's your reason straight away!

The second car you've linked too looks like it's seen paint down the near side too - the door colours don't really match. There's also no mention of an NCT.

I am not too familiar with the Ibiza but just having a quick look at the two and the more expensive car is a year newer, has longer nct, electric windows (other one may have them but I does not mention them in the ad) Cd player (cheap one only has Cassette).

There was negotiations on site but it was met with a firm no. She tried again later in the day through text. The year doesn't matter as long as it's 2004 and above. Also, there is a mention of NCT, it's in the photos. Good till 03/12

It lists off a CD player before it says about the casette.

But you are not comparing apples with apples here.

What you are saying is you can get any Seat Ibiza cheaper than the one your friend is looking at, not a 2005 Seat Ibiza with similar spec and mileage.

    Not the same thing.

The 2005 car is a better deal, a year younger, seems to be better spec'd, doesn't look like it's been badly repaired (the 2004 car you posted to looks like IMO).

To my eye, the 2004 car looks like it's had paintwork on both sides.

i went to look at a bora off that crowd thats selling the second car (99% sure its the same anyway) it was addvertised as a 130bhp tdi in excellent condition. rang up the guy and chatted to him about it. said the car is mint inside and out, in perfect working order etc so i arranged to go view it.

when i got there the car was a wreck. looked like it was drove through a ditch, marks, dents and scratches all over it. sat into it. leaves and dirt all over the floor and there was an awfull smell in it.

went to start it, it wouldnt and it had to be jumped. very little of the dash clocks worked. no speedo or rev gauge. to top it all off it wasnt even a 130 but a 100bhp baseline. i was like a bull over it.

    Cheers for the replies lads.

Another thing, could yee please post here stating that a car with more than 70,000 miles will NOT just decide to pack it in and die.

She's adamant that a car will no longer operate once it goes over the 70K mileage mark.

Ah, the old Irish attitude, Haven't seen it in a while!

My 2004 1.4 Focus has well over a 100,000 miles on it at this stage, and bar some routine maintenance it's never cost me a penny.

    Still running sweet too!
