I bought a car in the UK but it is currently out of Tax.

Im in ireland but am going to go pick up the car on friday i reckon.
It will be insured from tomorrow.
My uncle will be driving it from the dealership, he has the vc5 cert which is now in my name with my irish address.
Do I need to tax it in the UK?

I don't understand how I can tax it without having a UK address.

Tried ringing DVLA but you just cant get through to them.

    HELP!

You will have to tax it here which means that you will have to pay duty on it first.

its a 2006 car so what duty to have to pay apart from vrt?

That's not what the op asked.

By right you should tax it in the uk, but if you're just driving straight to the ferry port you might get away with it. In some cases dealers are reluctant to sell a car without tax, plus you could be stopped by the law and car taken from you if you meet an officer having a bad day.

I don't understand how you have the V5 in your name with an Irish address. That is not possible unless DVLA has breached its own rules. Has your uncle picked it up? If he is driving it on an extension to his own policy he may be able to tax it by bringing his own insurance cert to the post office with the V5. I have heard that this has been done in the past (it's one of the reasons why UK law is changing to requiring insurance for all cars rather than drivers) but it may take some convincing of the PO person.

the dealer gave me the v5 cert as i need it to register it once i bring it to ireland.

so is it just a case of going into a post office in the uk with the v5 cert and irish insurance policy number?

i dont have the policy document today as I'm insuring it tomorrow.

my uncle said i could tax it for 6 months and then get a refund on 5 months after but was unsure on how that would work with an irish address

what he means is that the dealer and he completed their details on the form and the dealer gave him the complete V5C.This is the correct procedure.

You wont be able to tax it on an irish insurance policy or without the V5C being in your name. You really have little choice but to chance it driving to the dock with no tax and hoping any Policeman uses his discretion to let you proceed if he stops you.

If you're really worried about the tax, the UK dealer will tax it on your behalf once you pay him I'd imagine.

If you do mange to tax it, tax it from the start of next month and return it for a refund as soon as you hit the docks and you could get the whole lot refunded:cool:

The DVLA will not issue tax refunds to anywhere outside the UK.

Tried this last year - sent the form to them with the disc and got a letter back to say this.

Has anyone actually has sucess with this?

Have been in this situation before, i just drove it from where i bought it to the port, you would have to be very very unlucky to a; be stopped or b; be hindered by the police if stopped.
If stopped explain its just purchased and the car is for permenant export. Your irish licence, irish insurance and ferry ticket will be good proof.

Widespread use of ANPR means your chances of being detected are much higher these days. UK Police will pull you and won't just "leave you off".

Get the seller put a minimal amount of UK road tax on it.

I have been "left off" twice by police in UK and basically told f*ck off to the ferry and get out of here asap. Once the car was going out of the country, to be re-registered for good, they didn't seem to want the hassle of doing anything about it

I had this during the summer. Car out of tax and dealer was telling me there was no way he could tax it.

Told the dealer there was two chances of me driving it away untaxed (I was stopping off for a couple of days in London but I didn't want the hassle/potential hassle of getting pulled) and the sale was off.

Dealer taxed it on my providing them proof that it was insured by me.

    panic over.

just found a reputable company who will ship the car over for me for 350 euro which is roughly the same cost as the ferry and flight cost i would have had

^ That's great value if you're happy to go ahead without seeing the car.

Perfect - I had an AA chappy look at mine before I bought as well - well worth it I think.

Range them today to book. Its 350 + vat which works out to around 423. Still think its worth it
