5 years ago it was approx 4w/kg at threshold to win a vets and junior race but it depended on who was there. if the top juniors were there it would get you top 6. In 5 years a lot has happened economically which I feel has raised the bar a bit (fellas unemployed training more!). As regards hours I would think 10 is ample if you are doing the correct training and not going with a group too big. As out most recent winner Diarmuid who is a power fella as well might be able to comment on his fine win in Dunlavin......

Here's my training load for 2011
There were some rides here that weren't split. So ignore this. Fixing up the data

EDIT: Nice coincidence morana, I was digging around in the power files to pull this up

Am I reading that chart wrong? your highest was about 1700km which took about 80 hours which is 21.25k/ph obviously hill climbing and what not but did I calculate it wrong?

Here you go. Average speed and 1/5/20 minute power. I'm 62kgs

so about 4.4w/kg in august for the dunlavin...crude I know but that would tally with what I thought.

Coincidentally I coached a junior who got bronze behind bennett and prendergast a few years ago and he was doing 4.7w/kg which is the same for an A2 rider last year to win a race.

    Does this help O/P?

I think in short if you train smartly right load, right duration and in a group who have similar goas 10-15hrs for us freds is more than enough.

Depends on your body's disposition to training/racing and also your race brain/acumen!

    Hard to measure I suspect!!

its not just power output and tactics, its also 'heart'. you gotta want it more than the rest. going past your pain threshold as you chase the line, sometimes its like an out of body experience, for me anyway.

edit*I dont think I read the question properly..

but it helps when you are going away from the group looking at the pm and you are saying to yourself "I go harder in training" but I take your point it isnt one thingalone but I still think if you dont have that fundamental power then its very hard to get by on the other stuff

Thats intersting but it does seem that ones who train harder and longer get the results177568.gif
for me i noticed everything came with time on the bike the numbers went up and the results came, always had the heart so to speak

My recorded hours for the year were:

    Nov: 24
    Dec: 9
    Jan: 13
    Feb: 21
    Mar: 31
    Apr: 37
    May: 50
    Jun: 42
    Jul: 51
    Aug: 39

This includes races. I didn't get a Garmin til recently so can't verify those figures with charts. May well have missed some hours along the way (especially at the start of the year), but the trend is right, more hours while moving up through the grades. Think my total from mid-October to end of August was 350-375 hours. I had thought i might do about 500 hours for a full season, so wouldn't have been too far off that if i'd kept going til mid-September.

I must have a look at those times of mine. They seem a bit long. Could be a few rides that were not split correctly.

I suppose those hours wouldn't necessarily all be on the bike. The majority yes, but for instance the track league, which started in May, I usually put down 2-3 hours for each evening at that even though I wouldn't have been on the bike for those hours. It distorts the figures I know, but it's time i was dedicating to the bike so that's why they're included. Excluding the track, the hours would still have been higher in those months.

Obviously Doran is riding well below his Functional Threshold Power or them two lads wouldnt be hanging on to him in that picture, even on the bike Doran is on.
