Problems with a Ford Galaxy - anyone have any advice?

I have a 03 Galaxy. Think it needs a new drive shaft and recently the petrol gauge & speedometer stopped working. Took it to a main dealer who hooked it up to their computer and could find no reason for the fault. Still they decided the sensors would have to be replaced! Tried taking out the entire unit from the dashboard and fitting a couple of others just to see would they work but nothing. Anyway was quoted a ridiculous amount of money by this dealership to have the above said work done. Anyone have any recommendations as to what i could do or who could do this work properly for a reasonable amount of money? Thanks in advance.

Why do you mention the driveshaft and did the speedometer problem start at the same time as the driveshaft?

I don't know anything about the Galaxy but I do know that some modern cars get their speedometer signal from one of the ABS wheel sensors.

Is the ABS warning light on? I'm just wondering if the driveshaft problem could be something like a wheel bearing or CV joint, and could the resulting movement in the hub have damaged the ABS sensor.

The problem with the drive shaft occured first. The symptoms were mentioned to the main dealer & they said probably a new drive shaft needed. Apparently its a common problem in the galaxy. The speedometer & petrol gauge went at the same time & now the abs warning light has come on. So now i'm wondering whats next?

Given that three unrelated systems (speedo, fuel gauge and airbag light) are showing issues, it may be that the instrument cluster itself is broken. Another possibility is damaged wiring between the sensors and the instrument cluster.

That being said, if the wiring was damaged, the diagnostics should have picked up the issue: did they scan the instruments for faults? That Galaxy had a lot of commonality with the VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra (all three are basically the same car) but I'm not sure if this extended to the electrics/electronics. Address 17 on VW diagnostics is where they'd need to be looking.

TBH, going to a main dealer for work on an 8 year old car is probably not the best idea. There are a lot of independent garages with full diagnostics now and they'll do the work more cheaply and won't be on the hook to sell you expensive parts all the time.

A good auto-electrician will probably be able to determine if the sensors or wiring are at fault, and if they're not, you're looking at a new/reconditioned instrument cluster.
