If my old NCT disc expires Nov 20th and I pass my NCT on Oct 20th, will new NCT disc start on Oct 20th or Nov 20th?
    Thanks!

Trying to work out when I should put car in for nct

    cool, thanks meditraitor,
so there's no disadvantage to booking the car in a month before its nct expires - good to know.

No disadvantage at all, I'll be putting mine through as close to the three months before it's due as possible.

It makes no odds.. like car tax the new disc will take effect from the next month that the last one expired in

    Nov 20th,
    Wrong.

The new NCT cert and disc will be dated from the day you passed the test regardless of whenever that is and regardless of whether you're early or late in passing it. It's never post-dated and never back-dated.

However in all cases it will expire on the next renewal date (anniversary of registration).

Once you pass the test the new disc is valid and you can stick it up which in your example will be 20th Oct.

nope, perfectly legal, your dad just didnt bother to NCT it for 1 year.

    2001 2002 car :

    1st NCT : 2006
    2nd NCT : 2008
    3rd NCT : 2010
    4th NCT : 2012

your dad must not of NCT'd it in 2010.

That 02 car should have had it's NCT in 2010, so for being a year late you will only get a cert for 1 year.

Isn't it possible that his Dad's cert still had 3 months to run though?

My '02 car is tested to 12-01-2012 and my notification letter with web booking I.D. arrived today, bang on 3 calendar months before expiry.

Bearing in mind that the one year test kicks in on the 10th annivarsary of the first registration I got to wondering if I book it in before it's formally 10 years old can I get the benefit of a two year cert.

Probably not, but I'll have to look up the wording of the relevant legislation and check it out. Anybody out there tried this yet?

    No you can't.
No matter when you do it, you will get a cert only to 12-01-2013.

Legislations says about car presented for it's 10th anniversary test.
This test can be done up to 90 days before due date.
    So that's it.
