Can you ellaborate more Robbie? What aspect are you looking to set out - batter rails / Profiles etc? Or is it basically the entire procedure?

If you are familiar with a Total Station etc. it is basically the same. Once you have worked out your data, you use the GPS to set out the points x,y,z.

Is it a Road you are setting out or just bulk earthworks of a site? Regardless of which the main thing you will be setting out are 'profiles' a fixed distance above the formation levels. The lads on the ground will then 'bone' between these and use to excavate / fill the areas required. Typically on a Road project, profiles will be erected every 10m on either side of the carriageway. But on a site they may not be required that often.

Have a look at the attached which might give you a good idea of means and methods of earthworks.

Depending on what exactly you are doing it is best to talk to the lads on the ground and see what they want and are used to. e.g they may find it easier to work with a certain height of profile or how many profiles do they want?

The easiest way I find re: setting out profiles is to set out the E and N on the ground, bang in the stakes and then use the GPS again to determine the height of the profile cross-bar above or below the top of stake. You could use a level also but I find it easier to use the GPS.

If you are setting out are of cut / fill or embankments, you basically just work back your co-ordinates & levels etc. from the most extreme point of the cut or fill taking into account the gradient. You can then position a batter rail showing the cut / fill area and having the cross bar at the same gradient as the embankment etc. You also mark the fixed distance to the most extreme point on the cross bar. The lads on the ground can then work from this.

Hope this helps Robbie. Please feel free to ask more questions if you have any.
