Monday was closing date..I'd say there were thousands of applications...

Starting pay is crap, if you're not an existing PS, which I am....would an experienced IT professional happily start on 29k ???

I am a recent IT Graduate with IT work experience so its the graduate role I am hoping to get. Ya it was. Just happened to get it in on time. Pity it couldn't just been emailed rather than posted. All that printing and writing, there was a lot in the application form took a while to get it done.

Say there will be a lot of applications I'd imagine they will have a cut off point so not everyone will get interviewed. :(

29k isn't bad now, I be happy enough with that myself for a graduate salary but I suppose for an experience professional you'd expect more. There are just more cuts now in the civil public service so think a certain salary will be main-streamed for everyone.

    Good luck to everyone else!

You will go through their recruitment process, show off all your i.t related skills and qualifications, get the job and then end up in paye or something absolutely nothing to do with your skills. Revenue will end up hiring a load ao who end up sitting around getting paid more and doing a clerical officers job.

However Ive had the joy :) of working on various temporary civil service contracts, Revenue would be by far the best run ive seen even though it is so inefficient.

This previous post is a crock of sh*te. If you get one of these positions you will be employed as an IT specialist (AO equivelent) and will never be asked to do CO duties. It is amazing, that in these times, there are still people offering up such banal rantings in an attempt to de motivate those wishing to improve their own situations.

Put it this way, if Revenue need some new app written in Java etc they will more than likely hire in consultants. The AO will not usually be doing this work regardless of the skills shown off at the interview.

I guess it would depend where you are in the public sector. Where I've been theres been a mix of contractors and internal staff doing development. But certainly the plan (where I've been) is to move to use contractors more. Simply because there isn't the resources internally. Theres probably a policy somewhere in Revenue that states what their plan is.

Again, no truth in this statement at all. The vacancies are for IT specialists not general servive AO's. General service AO's would never have and never will do this job but IT specialists will. The closing date for applications has passed now so no one can be put off by mis infomation of this ilk.

Ive only worked in IT in Revenue, but have to say that its probably the most IT'centric PS body that there is.

wont be the case for much longer in any Dept really given the ridiculous cost of IT consultants in the PS

I agree with Miju on this, Departments are under pressure to reduce budgets so in the past where external contractors would have been drafted in to complete complex programming tasks, more is being asked of Departmental staff in this area now. I believe that there will be lots more asked in the future so funding on training in this area will be available for those who are fortunate enough to get one of these positions. I think this is a good job for someone who wants to develop these skills.

Rather than contractors they might simply outsource the projects entirely. Isn't that a possibility too?

Anything is possible I suppose BostonB, but in my view many public service organisations did not focus on developing these skills during the boom times. Now that money has dried up there is a push on (better late than never) to have staff develop these skills. Market rates for programmers are rising so the public service has to look at cheaper options. The entire outsourcing of these projects is unlikely in my view as the project management & business analysis of systems is mainly carried out by in house staff at a reasonable cost. It just seems to be the programming element that is lacking.

Thats whars being done at present and to say the taxpayer is being sickeningly over charged to point of millions is an understatement

I'm assuming we'll be ages waiting on this as I'd say there were thousands of applications :(

That the downside of a recruitment embargo. The advantage is you won't have to pay pensions or keep them on between projects.
