if he is steady and working i would keep at him, there are plenty ways to get the dog under control, if it was me i would stick with the dog, how is the dogs recall

i started training a dog last year, ask plenty questions, spend as much time with the dog as possible and meet as many birds as possible, everything else should fall into place after that

go right back to basic training with him 20 minutes twice a day for a couple of weeks.just do it in your back garden for a couple of days with stop whistle to get him used to your pip.you need to show him your the boss or he ll never listen to you

I might get banned for saying this and so be it. If you can't control the dog you have then there is no point in looking for another dog. The first dog I owned was a 4 year old ex trialling dog that I bought for big money. He was a serious hard going dog and trained to an immaculate standard. I could not handle him so I asked the lad I bought him off to take him back. He said he would and would give me my money minus 50quid for his trouble. I was delighted, he said there was one other option. I asked him what it was, I was shocked by the answer. He said 'GROW A PAIR OF BALLS AND GET ON WITH IT':D

My pride was hurt and I reigned that dog in, I was offered huge money by local lads for him, he was superb and made me into a handler. I have trained a few springers since for rough shooting with great success and it is all due to that hard going dog I mastered that I would have returned had I copped out of the deal.
My advice is that you have a dog that is rock steady, you would be insane to get rid of a dog like that, go back to basics reign that dog in and dare I say it GET ON WITH IT!
Good luck my friend, I hope your ego has been hurt like mine was and you get working on that dog you have.

Do you hunt with anyone who have pointing dogs? Or know anyone that take you and the dog out for a few hours to show you what your doing wrong? Also seeing as your buying a dog why not send him to a dog trainer to work out the kinks, it's usually 70-90 euro a week and if your dog is rock steady as you say, I would look more into a trainer instead of replacing it

Good man Kev thats the spirit, good dogs are hard got as you now know. I have very limited knowledge of the pointing dogs but the lads on here will help.
What are the problems you have? Is it recall? Spell it out for us.

thanks for getting back the problem is he just takes off and wont respond to me if he finishes for excample the beet field he is in after trying every leaf in the field he will just head off in to the next one disregarding my recall but if he finds a bird he is solid on point would just love to be able to get him to quater nicely and stop him leaving the field that i am in

The best thing is to start a thread in the main forum.

All gundog training starts on the basics. At this stage that dog dosen't see you as the boss. Now the boss dosen't need to batter the crap out of the dog but he needs to get his way.

Take the dog into a yard or your garden and work on getting the dog to take your command. Get him on a long lead and give him the recall pip on the whistle, if he doesn't turn immediately give a tug on the lead and he will come back into you. Do this for 5-6 times over a 10 minute session once or twice a day. Don't bore the dog.

It takes time and with the 1st of november looming you need to realise he may not be ready but don't give up. You should also get him sitting and staying.

Start a thread in the main forum and have a look on youtube and you will be amazed what you can learn.
    You must be patient.
If the dog was good on the recall before you got him then if you get tough and consistent you will turn him round quickly, if he has always been problematic on the recall it will take longer.

you need him on the stop whistle first before you start quatering.

use a choke lead and walk around your back garden and when you blow that whistle [just one good pip] just give a slight tug on the lead at the same time and make him sit.do this for 5 mins 2 or 3 times a day for a week.

then when he is responding to this 100% leave him sitting there and you just walk to the top of the garden and back to him and give him PLENTY OF PRAISE pet him under the chian.

dont be afraid to praise your dog everytime he does right
