Apologies if this is a stupid question but I'll ask anyway as its annoying me

The OH has a 08 Mini Cooper and has 90k on it. No mention in manual of timing belt replacement intervals.

I asked the question of someone else and was told modern timing belts are actually chains and don't need replacing, is this true?

    Thanks for your help

    Bob

Yep it's a chain, no need to replace...

Thanks for the quick reply, that saves a few Bob,

Now I'm off to check if my 07 Octavia has a belt or a chain, if it has a chain my mechanic is getting a foot in the h*le as he charged me €600 about 12mths ago for a replacement one

That'll be a belt alright but €600 is saucy!

Its not a case of modern cars using chains, some use chains, some use belts, its depends on the engine design.

Your octavia should be a belt but as has been said, €600 is mad money for a timing belt change one of those,
