I am moving to a small cottage that does not have a heating system. I would like to have some form of automatic central heating system and maybe a stove. I am wondering what alternatives there are to oil/gas. Is storage heating any good now. I remember having it twenty years ago and it was hot in the morning but cold by the time I came home at 6. Any views or ideas appreciated

    • timber stove with back boiler or gasification boiler both work with well with Rads (possibly local fuel, renewable, but not 'automatic':))
    • air source heat pump connected to rads probably a better option than storage heater (but you run the risk of high electricity bills and low efficiency when needed most..)
    • geothermal and solar (maybe not suitable unless you were willing to upgrade the external envelope, but should you be doing this anyway while putting in the heating?)

Seems like you need a short term soloution to get you over the winter, check out heaterking.com, i got one of these portable heaters for the winter just in case of any problems with the pellet boiler.
