    Hi,
Can anyone give me advice. I have a friend who's self employed but recently had an accident. He's married with kids to support. They now have zero income. When they tried to claim any social welfare they were told as he was self employed they are not entitled to ANYTHING !
1, No Dole as he's not available for full time work.
2, No disability as he's expected to be off his feet for 6 months and for that benefit you need to be out for over a year.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Miss T25

Supplementary Welfare Allowance from the Community Welfare Officer. Basically can perform the same role as Illness Benefit for those without sufficient Class A PRSI contributions. He'll have to get medical cert from doctor to support the application.

It is means tested, so if his wife is working, anything that she earns will be deducted from the payment. Maximum payment will be 186 + 124.80 for partner/spouse and 29.80 for each child.

Just a note that if the spouse/partner is working more than 30 hours a week, this will not be available.

    Hi

I did not want to make new topic, similar situation but different question:

I fell from a ladder while at work (Im self employed) and went stright away to emergency.
My leg is broken and needs possibly surgery, today is my second day in hospidal (waiting ct)
Only insurance I have is public liability insurance, nothing else (like VH1or similar)

Im really worried about my hospidal and surgery bill, if it will reach tens of thousands, I just dont have such money..
Am I covered by public sector something something or I better prepare to be ready for sell my house...

Never been in such situation nor my friends so absolutley no idea.
3 months at least no income but that is ok, I'll survive.

If you are a public patient in a public hospital there is a max amount you will have to pay.http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/Find_a_Service/Older_People_Services/Benefits_and_Entitlements/Hospital_charges.html

    Thanks for the answer.
    Almost clear
    but
What is the difference being public or private patient?

Are self employed people public or private people ?

Seamus, "private patient" means you are in hospital and your bills will be covered by your health insurance company, for example the VHI.

You have said you don't have health insurance so you are in hospital as a public patient. As such, I believe you may have a certain amountl to pay but certainly nothing in the order you fear. There is a maximum amount for any one year.

Get well soon. Hope recovery goes smoothly for you. Home and able to enjoy Christmas etc.
