    Hi

I recently had a virus on my computer which i fixed, but since then cant connect to my printer. Keep getting the following message:

Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running

Its a HP 3100 photosmart express.

Have tried everything from internet to fix but cant.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix it would be great.

    Thanks

This error occurs because the Spooler service has not been started or has stopped working. To start the Spooler service, follow these steps:

1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

3.Double-click the Printer Spooler service, and then change the startup type to Automatic. This sets the Spooler service to start automatically when you restart the computer.

4.If you want to start the spooler service immediately, click the Start button under the Service Status field.

    STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

thanks for reply. i have tried that but it immediately stops when i restart. When i change the status to automatic and press start it starts ok but it doesnt give me the option below to apply settings. so once i press ok it stops again and when i try to add printer again i ende up with the original printer spooler message again Have spend days trying to resolve it but no joy.

If you have set spooler service to start automatically and rebooted and it still stops your PC probably isn't quite clear of the virus. The spooler service should stay running. You don't specify what you used to clear the virus - I would recommend you install avast and malwarebytes and scan with both of those. If that doesn't work your probably looking at a restore of your system or a windows repair.

Have you tried to uninstall your printer using the uninstall program supplied on your printer driver disk.

    see:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=1146511&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=1146511&objectID=c02259020

If the printer driver has not been fully installed it may still have some files or settings remaining which could be causing the problem
Yeppydeppy might be right about the virus

If you are planning to run the uninstaller be sure to read the notes on the above link as the uninstaller will probably remove a lot of HP programs/Utilities

Thanks yippydippy, malwarebytes seemed to have got it sorted to a certain extend.

The printer is connected back up and the printer spooler is working.

I can now print off web pages and use the scanner.
The photocopier and printing from open source documents which i use are not working.

Would there be any reason for this?

You've proabably had to re-install the printer so it may have used a generic driver. Ensure the driver for the printer is the latest one and for the correct model printer.
