Its all car dependent. What is effective on one car might do sweet f*ck all on another car so its difficult to give a general guide to suit all cars.

The only 'General' things are correct grade oil and regular servicing ensuring all working parts are in order.

Other than that it is completely car dependent

or an engine swap, that usually does the job too :D

If the car is turbo, larger exhaust and uprated intercooler followed by a map, will give you the biggest gains on the engine followed by lighter wheels and better suspension and engine mount's for the body.
If it's a naturally aspirated engine it will be tougher gaining power without spending serious cash (Turbo/Supercharger upgrades or forged internals), the cheapest way would be to reduce unsprung weight, again by adding lighter/smaller wheels, improving the engines breathing and searching out better grade fuel, 97/99 RON, will slightly improve performance.
    What have you got?.

Im gonna be boring and say the easiest way to speed up your car is upgrade the driver ;) learn to drive your car properly, book yourself into mondello with yoyur own car for their beginners track session, it will be the best 50 euro you have ever spent. The difference a bit of tuition makes is amazing! it also puts you in your place.

other than that the easiest and cheapest way is to reduce weight, a few hours with some dry ice will get rid of all the heavy sound deadening, then strip out all non essentials.

On the current car...a big turbo(taken of whatever is handy and then made fit),fmic,an injector pump with internal mods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Flyer1

Fuel, air and spark make an engine make power. The more of each you get in to it the better. Use your own head for that one ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

The usual easy things are air filter, exhaust/decat, throttle body and a remap :D

What car have you got first anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,752 ✭✭✭Bohrio

It depends on the car. Mine for example I decided that, for the moment, I wouldnt do anything apart from changing the exhaust (just because I wanted it to be more responsive and to sound a bit more "angry".

But as my engine is naturally aspirated upgrading my ECU, changing the air filter, etc will barely gain me 10-30 (if) hp which wont make much of a difference tbh.

If I want to gain serious power I will need a turbo/supercharger and that's about 16K euro on my car... a lot of money in my opinion. New pistons and a lighter fly wheel etc will also improve the cars performance but again, I will have to spend a lot of money.

I can't complaint though as when I bought a car I knew that any upgrades will be more expensive.

16 grand?! What type of car is it?

That sounds bloody expensive for a turbo alright.
What kind of power is it doing now for an extra 30bhp not to make a noticeable diference?

The car is an RS4 B7. Any upgrade to that car is very very expensive unfortunately!

ECUs are cheap enough, the only reason why I might get one is because I have heard that this particular ECUs will improve the car response on 1st and 2nd gear. First gear in the RS4 is almost unusable...

    Thanks!

Only got it this summer. No pics yet, however there is a video of it on youtube.

It was taken by Souhans Exhaust while I was getting the exhaust fit.

It doesn't sound as loud as it does in real life but you can get an idea. The car is pretty much stock. I am thinking of doing a few minor things to the car but I will wait until the warranty is over (oil catch tank, air filter and ECU).

Shame they didn't cover the license plate I might download the video and edit it myself

Isn't there an MTM tuner up North somewhere, I know some of their maps aren't too expensive.

MTM are very good but it is expensive. The turbo upgrade cost almost 40K. The ECU upgrade is around 1700 euro and you only get an extra 15 hp.

In my opinion, not worth it.

The exhaust system (cat-back) goes for around 3000 euro.

I am not sure if there is a branch in NI though...

APR are cheaper and decent enough but nothing in Ireland either. If I want to upgrade my ECU I will have to send it to the UK. Overall it will cost 650 plus postage...

Before doing anything I want to have my car dyno to see how many hp the car has lost due to carbon build up... Anyone knows where can I get this done? I live in Dublin!!! :)

Might want to check out this crowd then, 600 euro for stage one giving you 15bhp-30ftlbs, they also have stage two and three, might be worth checking them out.

Have you tried this crowd?, they list a map that will take it too 450bhp.
They don't list prices but you can guarantee they will be cheaper than MTM.

Mad tuning and auto tune work together, here is Marks website. He done mine and can also get a map that you want or suits from reidy remaps uk. http://www.madtuning.co.uk/car-gallery.html
    http://reidyremaps.co.uk/?page_id=82
Was ust looking and they can increase bhp by approx 50 on your rs4, that's impressive but you would need everything in good working order for that increase such as turbo seals etc.

    Thanks

I rang auto tune the other day. He sounded very helpful and was cheaper than I expected. All I need to do is leave the car with him for 1 1/2 hours and thats it. He will even come home and map it, all for less than 400 euro, sounds very promising!

But first I want to get the car dynoed as I want to check how much power the engine is producing, just to make sure it hasnt lost too much due to carbon build up and if it has get the audi to clean the intake before the warranty runs out...

Might open a thread about this carbon build up thingie. It would be useful to all Audi FSI owners.

Oh and yes is a B7 so is a N/A engine. The B5 is the biturbo. Personally I think 50 hp is too much, i will be surprised if I get anywhere close to 20 hp... we will see!
